Ok, I listened… now what?

If you read my last article, I encouraged you to LET IT GROW! So, now you have this growth on your face that is either filling in nicely or driving you crazy! Well, as we shared, you need to maintain it. What does that mean? It means you need to buy some product that will help moisturize and care for the hair and skin beneath it.

Wait, I have to buy product JUST for my beard? Yep. The hair on your face is much different than the hair on your head. The hair follicles are generally thicker and need more than the hair on your head. Right now, your skin is not used to this new cover and its sucking the moisture out of your face. This is causing that constant need to scratch. Don’t scratch it! Moisturize it!

What does moisturize even mean?

There are so many different ways to moisturize your skin with lotions, creams, serums, and on and on the list goes. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. I’ve done a good bit of research on this and while there are many different options, I’ll break it down for you when it comes to beard oil.

All beard oils contain a ‘carrier oil’ that is the base of the oil and then you can add additional supplemental oils to enhance the moisturizing value. I found the following oils to be some of the best for your beard as well as your skin:

1. Jojoba Oil – a naturally grown plant that has seeds, similar to coffee beans, that when pressed give off an oil extract that is generally used for skin and scalp conditions like psoriasis and acne. Jojoba oil has a very high Vitamin E content as well. We’ll get to that in a minute.
2. Castor Oil – yep, just like Mom made you take when you had a stomach ache, nausea, constipation, etc. Castor oil has been used in moisturizing products for decades and because it is a natural product, it reduces the risk of irritations and the need for other chemical fillers. It’s a thick hydrating oil that helps skin maintain its moisture longer.
3. Vitamin E- while the Jojoba Oil has a good bit of this, it never hurts to have a little more Vitamin E. It has anti-oxidant qualities, enhances hair growth and is also extremely hydrating for the skin.
4. Essential Oil – these are more of the fragrance but they do all have amazing skin and hair benefits. While where are dozens of options here, I’ve list some of the more popular ones: Tea Tree, Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Lavender, Orange, Lavender, Peppermint, Rosemary

Making sure the Beard Oil you choose has the core ingredients that will not only be key to helping your skin and beard hair but also smelling clean and fresh. Most men that I talk to, that wear beard oil every day, don’t have to wear cologne or other scented products.

Which scent is best for me?

This is obviously a personal decision. Different situations may make one scent more desirable over another. Since most essential oils have a natural earthy type fragrance, you can choose a woodsy scent like Cedarwood for work or going out, while a more subtle scent like Sandalwood may be more of a casual option. Fruit oils like Orange, Lemon, Grapefruit have a sweeter smell that may fit in just your day-to-day option. If you have a significant other, let them pick! There’s nothing better than being told, “Wow, you smell good!”

Where do I find this amazing elixir!

There are hundreds of beard oils on the market. That can be a blessing and a curse. How do I choose? Do your homework. Does the product have natural and organic oils? Do they use multiple carrier oils? Do they use essential oils and not fragrance?

Another thing you need to consider is, how much do I need? Most companies sell oils in 1.5oz or 2oz bottles. Depending on how often, and how much, you use each time, this could be gone in a week or so.
