We Will Never Forget: An Inspirational Tribute to One of the Many Examples of the Unity and Sacrifice Shown on 9/11

Each year on 9/11, LKNConnect publishes the The Great Boat Evacuation, also known as the “Maritime Evacuation of Lower Manhattan,” was one of the most remarkable yet lesser-known events that occurred on September 11, 2001. After the attacks on the World Trade Center, hundreds of thousands of people found themselves stranded in Lower Manhattan, with bridges, tunnels, and subway systems closed. In response, hundreds of boats, including ferries, tugboats, and private vessels, spontaneously coordinated to evacuate an estimated 500,000 people in what became the largest maritime evacuation in history—larger even than the evacuation of Dunkirk during World War II.

This extraordinary rescue effort showcased the courage and solidarity of everyday citizens, mariners, and first responders, all working together under chaotic circumstances.

We Will Not Forget,” honors the heroic collective effort, emphasizing the resilience and humanity that emerged during one of America’s darkest days. It serves as a reminder of the unity and sacrifice displayed on 9/11 and underscores the importance of remembering those moments of hope amidst tragedy.
