The Gentlemen’s Guide – No Shave November and our One Year Anniversary!

Well everyone, it’s been a year! What started as a little article about beard care has turned into one of the most popular articles at LKN Connect! I am honored and grateful to have a platform and a ton of faithful readers month after month. I thought it would make sense to go back to basics this week to talk about what started it all. This journey has been more about growth and giving back to the community.

What is No Shave November?

What started as a tribute in 2007 to a father who was lost to cancer, has now become a national, if not global, month of Men’s Health Awareness. We’ve covered many of these topics over the past year, but it never hurts to have a reminder. Men need to take care of themselves so that they can take care of others. That’s our primary role, in my opinion, and sometimes we forget how important ongoing maintenance of the one and only body we have really is. Here are some of the main factors of No Shave November that has made it so successful:

  1. Let it grow! Yep, you’ve heard it here. Let that beard grow! We’ll talk at the end about care but give it a shot this year, even if you think it won’t grow. The good news is you can always shave it if it goes wrong.
  2. Get that checkup! If you haven’t had your physical this year, get it done before year end and before you possible have a new year of deductibles. Treat your body like or better than your car. A tune up is always a good thing! Prostate and colon exams are an absolute must.
  3. Check on your brothers. This is what started it for me. Not everyone needs that call but you probably know who does. Don’t be afraid to pick up the phone or send a text. Wouldn’t you be grateful to hear from a good friend?
  4. Donate to a cause that focuses on Men’s Health and spread the word on social media. I won’t get into the weeds here, but a little research will go a long way.
  5. Don’t only focus in November, focus all year long. Taking care of yourself and your brotherhood is a 7×365 day effort. Finding time to get together and be a good friend are not part time roles. Friendships hopefully last a lifetime. Do you part to invest in them.

Ok so I let it grow, now what?

When I started my Beard Oil company, BRO Beard Products, I found hundreds of options, dozens of You Tube videos and a never-ending list of ways to care for my beard. I wanted to make it simple, easy and affordable. So, I did my research, found out what made one oil better than another and made my own. It was a very exciting, and scary, process, to start a business, build a product portfolio, and get it to market. I never had that entrepreneurial gift, but my amazing girlfriend pushed me and I haven’t looked back. Here’s a few quick points to keep that beard looking and feeling great!

  1. Keep it groomed. Before we ever talk about what to put in it, it needs to look good. Staying on top of its growth is critical. Learning how to trim and shape it is important.
  2. Keep it clean. I know this sounds obvious, but I can’t tell you how many guys missed some of their lunch in there… I carry a brush with me and find myself grooming more often than not.
  3. Keep it lubricated. The beard hair and your skin need to stay lubricated. I know we generally don’t focus on skin care as guys, but your beard requires it! Finding the best oil and balm products could mean the difference on how it grows.

It’s been quite a year!

I can’t tell you how grateful I am for this opportunity every other week to speak to the men and the boys in our community. So many have come up to me to share a story or feedback about something they’ve read. As I’ve shared, I’ve never been a writer. This has been a year of amazing growth, being comfortable with being uncomfortable and striving every day to bring just one more piece of good advice to the community. I promise to continue to do my best to share my knowledge, experience and hopefully good advice to all that follow me. Thank you for a wonderful year! I look forward to the next one!
