Grandma's Recipe for a Lasting Relationship

My grandmother cooked to delight. When she called us to the table, we came running—mouths watering for the comfort that only her food could bring. Each bite was a hug for the body, a balm for the day. Aaahhh, yum! So, when I was preparing to marry, I grinned as she handed me not just a recipe for food, but one of her favorites: How to Preserve a Husband. Of course, this “recipe” is really about more than husbands—it’s about preserving any relationship, at work or at home. I’ve adapted it below:


My grandmother was grace embodied. She calmed ruffled feathers without shaming or blaming, and somehow met each person’s needs so they felt stronger, loved, and accepted—just as they were. She honored everyone equally; you’d never guess who was “difficult” and who was “charming.” She truly knew How to Preserve a Person. It was her everyday recipe, and the one I’m most grateful to carry on.
