Dear Dr. Margi,

My Desperate Design Dilemma is starting with the outside of our new house and then working in. We bought a wood house, and I am questioning the red trim. While I like it, I’m not sure what other options I might have. Do you have a color suggestion for the trim on my new house? –Elyse

Dear Elyse:

I am a red lover and feel it is very welcoming. However, in this case, it is a color blend and does not give the wood the uplift it needs.  Red’s undertone is brown; therefore, it is a total blend. I played with PowerPoint to show you how color can contrast to the brown wood tones and complement each other.

I worked with the green and gray to break up the areas up and give it life. Green’s undertone is black and therefore will contrast the wood.

Let me know your thoughts, Elyse.

Readers, we need your vote as well. Email me at [email protected] and vote for your favorite trim color on Elyse’s house: RED, GRAY, or GREEN.
