Summertime can be harsh on hair, leaving it appearing dull, brassy, or fried. Most of us know the damage that UV rays can do to our skin, but UV rays can also damage our hair. If you notice that your hair becomes dry and frizzy during the summer, UV rays, chlorine, and salt water are most likely the culprits. These environmental factors dry out hair and strip it of its natural oils. Dry hair is more likely to fade in color and is more susceptible to breakage and frizz.

Protect your hair while having summer fun: 7 tips

Here are some tips to protect your hair and keep your color vibrant while still participating in all the fun summer has to offer:

1. Get a trim at the beginning of summer.

Start your summer off right with a fresh haircut to keep hair healthy.

2. Wear a hat.

This will not only protect your hair from the sun but will prevent your scalp from getting sunburned. Spending a lot of time in the sun can cause color-treated hair to fade or become brassy. Wearing a hat can help color stay shiny and vibrant.

3. Use hair products that protect from sun damage.

Cherie Westerfield, a hairstylist at Modern Salon and Spa, recommends the OPC Suncare line. This line includes a shampoo and conditioner as well as a protective spray. The main ingredient in these products is Tamanu, which is excellent at rehydrating hair and cleansing it from chlorine. Westerfield loves the Suncare spray because it is great for kids and adults. Not only does this spray protect your hair, but it also works as an excellent detangler. Westerfield recommends applying this spray before entering the pool or ocean. That way, the hair is hydrated and nourished before being exposed to the elements.

4. Get your hair wet before entering the pool or ocean.

Rinse your hair with cool fresh water before going for a swim. If you are at the beach and don’t have access to a shower, bring a spray bottle filled with water and spray your hair before going into the ocean. Pro tip: after rinsing your hair, coat hair with conditioner and don’t rinse it out. The conditioner will act as a protective barrier for your hair.

5. Use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner.

During summertime, our hair comes into contact with a lot of drying environmental factors. It is important to keep your hair hydrated, especially if you have color-treated hair.

6. Get more frequent haircuts.

Hair grows faster in the summer and is more susceptible to damage. You may need to get an additional trim or go a shorter amount of time in between haircuts.

7. Use a deep conditioning treatment.

Adding a deep conditioning treatment to your weekly routine is an excellent way to keep hair hydrated and healthy in the hot summer months. Two great moisturizing masks are OPC Beauty Argan Mask and Evo The Great Hydrator Mask.
