On Tuesday, March 5, with very little fanfare–really just a sandwich board sign out front with a few festive balloons–Gâteau on Main opened its doors in Davidson on Main Street, just a couple doors down from Famous Toastery.
I decided to stop in for a few essentials, which turned into two bakery boxes filled with cookies, a scone, a cinnamon roll, and a poached pear with chocolate. I did exercise some restraint in not buying the macaroons–which the salesperson described as crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Next time this coconut treat will be mine. It also had the traditional French macarons, the sweet meringue-based confection made with egg whites, icing sugar, granulated sugar, almond powder or ground almond, and food coloring.
Gâteau on Main had a bit of a rocky start following its original opening in January. In a blog post dated January 29, it said, “We had an emergency with our pastry chef and felt it best to temporarily close than to try and give you something sub-par.” Now the dessert and pastry bar is fully staffed and baking breads and confections to its exacting standards. And you’ll taste the quality and craft in every bite.
It is hard to pick a favorite, so I’ll share two: the melt-in-your mouth amazing sugar cookies and the perfectly sweetened, flaky scones glistening with egg wash. Everything pairs well with its freshly brewed Pure Intentions Coffee, roasted locally in Charlotte. Beer and wine are also available.
Gâteau’s 700-sq.-ft. space seats ten, but with the large windows opening to Main Street, it feels spacious; there are also rockers and chairs on its over-sized front porch.
Gâteau on Main is located at 107 N. Main Street in Davidson. Open Tues.-Thurs., 7am-10pm; Fri., 7am-11pm; Sat., 9am-11pm; and Sun., 9am-9pm.
