What did you want to be when you grew up?

Were you the kid who wanted the family and white picket fence or the young athlete wanting to be an NFL superstar?  Maybe you had hopes of being a doctor, lawyer or police officer. Many children today don’t know or think they can be anything but what they see around them.

Let’s face it many children from lower-income families don’t have goals or ambitions of anything, not by the fault of anyone, they just don’t know what they don’t know. We, at the Make an Impact Foundation (MAIF) see that as an opportunity to actually make an impact in the lives of local children. We work together with local businesses and even other nonprofits to design and execute projects that change the story or course for some of our local young people. We look to provide them an opportunity not normally offered to them-access to sports, character education/values, careers, even if it is only just to plant the seed that they can be more than they see.

Who is MAIF?

MAIF is a 501©3 non-profit in Davidson, North Carolina, whose sole mission is to promote the education and well-being of children. We are here to help children in need. As our mission statement says, we identify children in severe need (homeless, poverty, trauma) as well as those with learning or emotional needs, disability or disease and create opportunities to produce change in their lives.

Since our creation in 2010, we’ve impacted many lives. At the beginning, we provided different groups financial and volunteer support through their projects that provided them the strength and resources to create their own thriving non-profit. Today we focus on partnering with non-profits and local businesses to help enhance the local community and bring together groups that will help the rising tide.

We’ve heard the adage rising tides lifts all boats. Be the drop that helps raise that tide. Even though our past projects are designed with local businesses and their employees’ passions in mind, there are always opportunities for individuals, like you to participate through their time, talent or treasure. Bringing Communities Together

Helping children reach for their dreams, exposing children to opportunities they never knew existed are just part of what we do at MAIF. We want to bring together a community so its not just us helping local children but local businesses, city officials, community members and families working together to help each other. Our projects provide anything from backpacks and school supplies to meals during the pandemic to as mentioned above, opportunities for children to thrive in sports and future career opportunities. Learn how we use this community model or as we call it our My Corporate Impact model in our next article.

At the end of the day, it’s not about what you have or even what you’ve accomplished.  It’s about who you’ve lifted up, who you’ve made better.  It’s about what you’ve given back. — Denzel Washington
