November lunch highlight: Davidson’s The Pickled Peach

by | In the Kitchen

Stuffed Artichoke Bottoms

Tucked back behind Ben & Jerry’s in Davidson, The Pickled Peach is the perfect spot to meet a friend or colleague for lunch, or even pull up a bar stool and enjoy some peace and quiet.

If you come between noon and 1pm, expect a line. But it moves quickly, and you’ll need a minute anyway to see the featured salads in the case and think about which of the three homemade soups you’ll want. I tried the vegan tomato and it was piping hot and peppery, a perfect soup to pair with a grilled cheese or really any of its amazing sandwiches. The ham and brie is a favorite, and if you’re vegetarian, try the grilled cheese or the shaved red beet sandwich, which features honey goat cheese, arugula, and balsamic reduction on grilled multi-grain, or you can get your sandwich wrapped in collard greens.

My go-to salad is the falafel. Honestly, I didn’t even know I liked falafel until I had this salad, which is served with a creamy cucumber salad, warm pita chips, and spring lettuces tossed with red wine vinaigrette. The flavorful light dressing complements each ingredient perfectly.

The Pickled Peach also offers these salads: chopped butter lettuce with chicken, spinach, grilled halloumi, Ama’s Caesar with kale, and the hay smoked burrata: roasted sweet potato, bacon, spring lettuces tossed with lemon walnut vinaigrette. Everything is extremely fresh and much of it locally sourced.

I always get the iced tea. Five flavors are made fresh every day, four unsweetened and one sweet. Paper straws are available, a nod to the environment. On my way out the door I always get a refill in a to-go cup.

Think about ending your meal with something sweet. I mean, how can you resist? The baked goods change daily, but it often has oatmeal cream pies, granola bars, strawberry bread pudding, lemon bars with oatmeal cookie crust, regular and gluten-free brownies, coconut chews, and more. The owners have very carefully curated all parts of the menu, including the desserts, so that if you have an allergy (gluten or nut) or a dietary preference (vegan, vegetarian, keto), they can make recommendations.

If you have a few minutes, stroll through its new marketplace. It’s mercantile-style setting is the perfect place to buy a hostess gift or put together an entire wine basket. Expect to find locally made pickles and relishes, dessert toppings, bitters (for the perfect cocktail), Abby’s Better Nut Butter, and much more.
