“A Taste of Germany in Troutman: Bavarian Kitchen Delivers Authentic Flavors with Heart”
If you’ve ever dreamed of wandering the cobblestone streets of Germany with a pretzel in one hand and a stein of beer in the other, look no further than The Bavarian Kitchen in Troutman, NC. Addison and I had the pleasure of dining with owner Fiona Oxsher, and let me tell you, this place is more than just a restaurant—it’s a culinary journey to the German countryside.

The Story Behind the Schnitzel
Fiona Oxsher isn’t just the owner of Bavarian Kitchen; she’s a chemist by day and a passionate preserver of German cuisine by night. When the original owners decided to move back to Germany, Fiona and her husband couldn’t bear to see their favorite restaurant fade away. So, they did what any food-loving couple would do—they bought it!

Fiona’s love for German cooking runs deep, straight from her grandmother’s recipe book to the plates at Bavarian Kitchen. Growing up in the Pfalz region of Germany, known for its wine, she spent her childhood cooking alongside family, creating memories and meals that now inspire her menu. With her husband by her side, Fiona has turned this restaurant into a haven for authentic German flavors, even going so far as to overnight sausages from Chicago to maintain authenticity.
The Atmosphere: A Slice of Bavaria
Walking into Bavarian Kitchen feels like stepping into a German village. The decor is charmingly authentic, with every detail transporting you across the Atlantic. Even the servers dress the part, adding to the immersive experience. It’s the kind of place where you can sip a cold German beer and feel like you’ve been whisked away, even if you’ve never set foot in Germany.
The Food: Authentic and Unforgettable
Now let’s get to the good stuff—the food. We started with the potato cakes, a classic German dish served with both apple sauce and sour cream because, as Fiona explained, Germans are split on which pairing is better. Addison loved them, calling them a flat, fancy tater tot.
Next came the schnitzel, and we had to go with the Jaeger style, smothered in a savory mushroom sauce. It’s the restaurant’s most popular dish, and it’s easy to see why—crispy, tender, and downright delicious.
Addison’s favorite was the goulash, a rich, hearty stew that she loved so much she boxed up the leftovers with her name on them. But my personal favorite? The Riesling chicken, a dish inspired by Fiona’s home region. Tender chicken in a wine-infused sauce? Yes, please!
Everything at Bavarian Kitchen is made in-house wherever possible, and you can taste the difference. This isn’t fast food; it’s slow, soulful cooking just like Fiona’s grandmother taught her.
They do offer daily soup, entree, and cake specials!
The Drinks: Prost!
No German meal is complete without beer, and Bavarian Kitchen doesn’t disappoint. I enjoyed a flight of their German beers on tap, each one better than the last. Whether you’re a beer connoisseur or just looking to try something new, their selection is worth exploring.
Nutrition Corner: Real Food, Real Flavors
Now, let’s get to the part where I tell you whether Bavarian Kitchen gets the Fit Foodie seal of approval. Here’s the deal: this isn’t the place to count macros or shave off calories. Even the salad comes with a surprise—potato salad and bean salad hiding under the greens! But Fiona is proud to say that everything is made from real ingredients, with no shortcuts in the kitchen.
This is the kind of place where you savor every bite, try new flavors, and maybe pair your meal with a giant stein of beer. Sure, it might not fit into your diet plan, but the quality of ingredients and authentic preparation make it worth every indulgent bite.
So, grab your lederhosen and head to Bavarian Kitchen. Whether you’re a fan of schnitzel, goulash, or potato cakes, you’ll leave with a full belly, a happy heart, and maybe even a little bit of wanderlust for Germany. Cheers to authentic flavors and unforgettable meals!
Final thought….Fiona said that most of her customers come from 2 hours away to enjoy the experience but that she doesn’t see many locals! Let’s get the word out about her awesome restaurant and please go visit her and tell her Amber sent you from LKN Connect!
