LKNConnect is pleased to launch a new video column, Local Sports Around the Lake, and to welcome Matt Chapman as our dedicated video anchor for high school athletics around Lake Norman. With a passion for highlighting student‑athletes, coaches, and school communities, Matt will bring you in‑depth coverage of local high school sports—from Friday night lights and gym‑floor buzzer beaters to the diamonds, pitches, courts, tracks, and more. Look for game recaps, standout performances, behind‑the‑scenes stories, and the moments that make Lake Norman’s high school sports scene one of the most spirited in North Carolina.
Three Lake Norman area teams are state championship bound after impressive performances at regionals in Hickory last weekend.
For the Mooresville High boys and North Lincoln High girls, it’s the first state championship appearance in the history of each respective program. The Blue Devils from Mooresville defeated the two-time defending state champions from North Meck, 55-52, to advance, while Knights of North Lincoln dominated Forest Hills in a 79-51 victory.
The North Meck High girls, meanwhile, will play for a state championship for the first time since 1986. The Vikings defeated Lake Norman, last year’s state champs, by a score of 73-57 in the regional final.
Matt Chapman is co-editor of the Lake Norman Citizen, and also the publication’s sole sports writer, covering all sports at the 15 high schools surrounding Lake Norman. He’s a graduate of UNC Charlotte, where he majored in Public Relations and minored in Journalism, while also serving as Sports Editor for the university newspaper. He’s been in the newspaper business for 10 years, covering everything from local government happenings, elections, businesses and nonprofits to sports and arts and entertainment.
