This week’s Lake Norman headlines highlight neighbors walking for an important cause, women finding friendship around the mahjong table, a commanding Hough High School football victory and mothers and sons serving their community together.
The Alzheimer’s Association invites Lake Norman and Iredell County residents to unite in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease on Saturday, Sept. 26, at Liberty Park in Mooresville.
Check-in begins at 9 a.m., followed by the opening ceremony at 10 a.m. and the walk immediately afterward. Participants will also take part in the Promise Garden ceremony, carrying flowers whose colors represent their personal connections to Alzheimer’s.
More than 210,000 North Carolinians are living with Alzheimer’s, supported by approximately 338,000 caregivers. Organizers hope the Lake Norman event will raise awareness, support local families and provide funding for continued research and care.

Mahjong is enjoying a remarkable resurgence around Lake Norman—but the friendships forming around the table may be the game’s greatest attraction.
Liz Davidson founded the Lake Norman Mah Jongg Society in 2024 with a small group of women learning to play in her home. The organization has since grown to approximately 270 members from Mooresville, Troutman, Denver, Cornelius, Huntersville and Davidson.
Members gather at restaurants, breweries, bookstores and other local venues, combining friendly competition with support for area businesses. The group has even paired mahjong with pickleball through its “Mahjong Dinkers” gatherings at The Serve in Cornelius.
For many women—especially those who recently moved to Lake Norman—the group has provided something they were missing: a welcoming social circle and a genuine sense of community.

Hough High School senior quarterback Ethan Royal delivered a career-best performance on one of North Carolina’s biggest football stages, leading the Huskies to a decisive 35-10 victory over Cardinal Gibbons.
Playing at Bank of America Stadium in the Keep Pounding High School Classic, Royal accounted for five touchdowns—four passing and one rushing—and threw for 285 yards without playing in the fourth quarter. He completed 15 of 20 passes and was named the game’s MVP.
Sophomore Mason Pearsall-Brown caught two first-half touchdown passes, while senior Jahmere Anderson added two touchdown receptions in the second half. The victory showcased Hough’s explosive offense and Royal’s growing command of the quarterback position.

Mothers and their teenage sons are strengthening both their relationships and the Lake Norman community through the Young Men’s Service League.
Created locally two years ago, the Lake Norman chapter has grown to nearly 200 members, including 120 young men from area high schools. Mothers and sons volunteer side by side while the students develop leadership, responsibility and valuable life skills.
The four-year program begins during a student’s freshman year, with prospective members starting the process while in eighth grade. With participation already reaching its limit of 30 young men per grade, organizers believe individual chapters could eventually emerge in several Lake Norman communities.
For the mothers, the organization offers meaningful time with sons who are becoming increasingly independent. For the young men, it provides friendship, hands-on service and the satisfaction of helping others.
