Hampton Hills Farmers Market – No-Till Farm: What does “no-till” farming mean? It means we’re getting back to how our ancestors farmed. Tillage of soils has increased carbon dioxide emissions in our atmosphere. You see, when farmers till soil, it breaks the layer of organic matter and exposes it to air. It also interrupts the pathways that worms, water and organic matter make to increase the permeability of the soil, thus making it more compact. The more compact and tilled the soil is, the more fertilizers and synthetic chemicals need to be used to keep the soil “sweet”.
