The week between Christmas and New Year’s Day is busy. Maybe you’re hosting family and looking for a unique place to eat. Definitely check out Hello, Sailor.
First, let’s start with the decor. It’s like a step back in time, with a modern, artsy nod to fish camps, mid-century Palm Springs, and Mad Men. I’m always struck by all the gorgeous light flooding in through the windows that showcase a beautiful view of Lake Norman. The interior colors are warm, drawn from browns and tans; and on a recent visit Gilligan’s Island was playing on the TV.
Start with a drink. This is the Subterranean Spritz: vodka, smoked pineapple, falernum, agave, key lime, and lime La Croix served over nugget ice. Wondering what falernum is? It’s a sweet syrup that contains flavors of almond, ginger, lime, and sometimes vanilla, clove, and allspice. It was very refreshing; you might need to order two.
Then order an appetizer. The roasted oysters are plump and will melt in your mouth and leave you wondering if you should order another. Don’t. Leave room for the entrée.
Now you’re ready for the entrée. The iceberg salad is crisp and fresh. You can get it with chilled smoked chicken, calabash shrimp, sautéed shrimp, or fried chicken.
Or maybe try the lobster roll, my personal favorite. It’s served on Kindred’s milk bread, which makes the fresh and savory lobster hit the next level of amazing. And do you see the watermelon on the side? Get it. I was the envy of my friends who all had a bite and then were trying to figure out how to recreate it at home. The menu said it was covered in al pastor and sea salt. But maybe it had a dash of olive oil as well?
I’ve read some of the reviews online, and they’re mixed. But every time I’ve been there, it’s been delicious. It is a little pricey, but I know I’m paying for not only thoughtfully curated food and cocktails but also that one-of-a-kind view of Lake Norman. So, I’ll be back.
