Golden Boys – Celebrating 25 Years!

For more than two decades, the Central Lake Norman Golden Boys have been bringing men together to make new friends, enjoy shared interests and stay connected to the community they call home. What began in 2002 as an informal social club for a small group of recent retirees has grown into an organization of approximately 500 members. Yet the heart of the Golden Boys remains remarkably consistent: friendship, fellowship and having fun.
As the club looks ahead to its Quarter Century Celebration — QC2 — on April 21, 2027, it is an ideal time to consider what has sustained the organization for 25 years. The answer can be found in a central feature of Golden Boys life: its Interest Groups.
The 2026-2027 Membership Booklet describes Interest Groups as “the core of the membership activity” of the Central Lake Norman Golden Boys. That is more than an organizational description. For many members, Interest Groups are where the club’s mission becomes real.
Members can join as many of the 30 Interest Groups as they wish. Some meet weekly or monthly, while others are organized around individual events or seasonal activities. Some include spouses or significant others, while others are designed specifically for members. The variety means that there is no single way to be a Golden Boy. Members can participate according to their own interests, schedules and comfort levels.
Consider the possibilities. Boaters can enjoy raft-ups, social gatherings, island picnics and cruises — and boat ownership is not required. Aviation enthusiasts can enjoy tours, specially arranged for Golden Boy members of museums, airport control towers, aircraft manufacturing facilities and other aviation-related destinations. Bike riders can participate in moderate rides designed for a range of experience levels. Book lovers gather monthly to discuss fiction and nonfiction.

For others, the attraction may be cars, cards, coffee, hiking, jet skis, golf, kayaking, woodworking, bowling or travel. The club’s Travelogue group gives members an opportunity to share photographs and stories about places they have visited.
The Walking Interest Group offers relaxed, social walks twice a month around the local area. The Retirement Life group brings members together around informative topics designed to help them navigate and enjoy their retirement years. Many Retirement Life topics are health and medical related given by subject matter experts who will spend two hours delivering a presentation and answering questions. When was the last time any of us were able to spend 2 hours with a doctor or surgeon?
Moving to a new community can be exciting, but it can also make establishing new friendships a challenge, particularly after retirement. Even long-term residents of the Mooresville area can find that retirement poses a need for new outlets and friends to fully enjoy their new life. The Golden Boys’ Statement of Purpose specifically recognizes this need: the club seeks to provide opportunities for men new to the area to meet local residents and become part of the ommunity through activities of common interest.
Participation does not have to mean being an expert. The Aviation group, for example, welcomes all Golden Boys and does not require previous aviation experience. The Boating group welcomes anyone with an interest in boats or boating, whether or not he owns a boat. The Car Guys likewise emphasize enthusiasm for automobiles rather than ownership of a classic car, sports car or hot rod.
Just as important, Interest Groups depend on members who are willing to make things happen. Volunteer Interest Group Leaders organize activities, communicate with participants, post events and help create the experiences that keep the club active. The club encourages members to consider becoming Interest Group Leaders, Board members or Special-Event Leaders. In fact, President Bill Scott points to his own experience: after joining the Golden Boys in 2023, he served as Membership Chairman, then Vice President, and now President. He also started the Walking Interest Group.
That spirit of volunteerism is critical to the club’s future. The Membership Booklet notes that Interest Groups determine their own plans for the types and frequency of meetings and activities, while leaders are responsible for coordinating and planning interesting opportunities for members. The Golden Boys also understand that friendships require continued attention. The Club’s Statement of Purpose includes a reminder attributed to Samuel Johnson: “A man should keep his friendships in constant repair.” That philosophy may be one of the simplest explanations for the organization’s longevity.
The upcoming QC2 Celebration is on April 21, 2027. This event will provide an opportunity for members* to celebrate 25 years of the Central Lake Norman Golden Boys. It will also be a chance to recognize the countless members and volunteers who have contributed to the organization along the way. Anniversaries are naturally about looking back. But for the Golden Boys, the QC2 can also be about looking forward — toward new members, new friendships, new Interest Groups and new experiences.
After 25 years, the formula remains refreshingly simple: find something you enjoy, find people who enjoy it too, and make the time to get together. That is the continuing value of the Central Lake Norman Golden Boys — and the reason its Interest Groups remain at the very heart of the club.
