Lake Norman will pause Friday to remember the lives lost, the heroes who responded and the families forever changed by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of that tragic day. Cornelius, Huntersville and Mooresville are offering meaningful opportunities for our community to gather, reflect and help future generations understand why we must never forget.
Following Friday’s commemorations, the weekend continues with cultural celebrations, local art, fall activities, outdoor competitions, live music and family fun.

Location: Cornelius-Lemley Fire Station No. 1

Admission: Free
The Town of Cornelius will hold its annual observance at the Never Forget | 9/11 Monument. The memorial incorporates a piece of steel recovered from the World Trade Center and honors the first responders, civilians and military personnel affected by September 11.
Why We Like It: The permanent monument creates a powerful local connection to the events of 9/11 while helping future generations understand the significance of that day.
What to Expect: A solemn community ceremony honoring the victims, survivors, first responders and members of the military.

Why We Like It: The walk begins at 8:46 a.m.—the moment the first plane struck the World Trade Center. Beginning at Richard’s Coffee Shop also creates a meaningful connection with the veterans who gather there.
What to Expect: A reflective community walk through downtown Mooresville followed by a memorial ceremony at Liberty Park.

The Town of Huntersville’s annual Field of Honor features a formation of 200 American flags displayed in remembrance of those who lost their lives.
