PHOTOGRAPHY: How to be Virtually Awesome!

Working from home has been an education for many of us. Where do you work from? What resources do you need? But most importantly, how are you showing up? Are you aware of how you look to your colleagues or friends?

Quick tips for Awesomeness

Placement

Position yourself correctly, look at how much space your head is taking up on the screen, try not to be too close, or too far away. Aim to be close enough that people can easily see you, but not so close that they only see your head.

Lighting

Consider how you are lit, use natural light where possible or artificial light if you need to, even a desk light angled towards you will do the job. You need to light your whole face evenly, so ensure you face directly onto your light source.

If you appear too light, just move away from that light source a little or get closer if you are still looking dark. It makes a massive difference to those looking at you, that they see you clearly, instead of an indistinguishable silhouette.

Note: having a light background will often hurt the eyes of the person watching you, as a large part of the screen will be very bright.

Where have you placed your camera?

Are you sitting on the sofa, laptop in lap, camera pointed straight up your nose!

This is not a good look. Furthermore, stretching out on the sofa relaxing is not sending the right message to anyone. Your camera source needs to be at eye level, which is easily done — place your laptop on a pile of books or anything else you have to hand.

Behave like a pro

And yes, look like one too

If this is a business meeting, sit up straight, shoulders back, behave like you are in a real meeting and always pay attention. Your colleagues can see you when you eat that snack (an absolute no-no), blow your nose, pick your teeth, or yawn!

Dress for business

It effects the way you feel as well as looking professional.

What is going on behind you?

We do not want to see your kitchen plates, bed, kids playing — choose an area with a plain wall if possible. Practice how you will appear by taking a Facetime call beforehand — How are you looking?

Put these tips into practice and you will go from showing up to awesome instantly.
