Davidson Board of Commissioners approved a budget amendment of $30,000 to transfer funds from unassigned fund balance to operating budget to ensure the town can purchase enough personal protective equipment (PPE) for the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fund balance is the term for what amounts to a government’s multi-faceted savings account. Its categories include dollars kept in reserve to comply with regulatory statutes, funds designated by board votes to specific projects or purposes, and the final firewall of financial security.

Commissioners approved a contract with CTV Engineers approving a maximum of up to $2,000,000 for construction engineering and inspection services related to the Main Street improvement project. The project includes an estimated 1.3 miles of public roadway improvements through the downtown area, with roundabouts at the northern and southern connections with N.C. 115.

Sidewalks and water-and-sewer enhancements are also part of the project, which will provide an alternative north-south corridor parallel to N.C. 115. The more than $17,000,000 project will also enhance access to planned development along and east of Main Street and is being financed by municipal as well as federal and state money. The project has been a prioritized part of the town’s capital improvement “wish list” for decades. Construction is scheduled to begin soon.
