The Mooresville Soup Kitchen is LKNConnect’s Outstanding Non-Profit for the month of January. Last week, we explored the benefits of volunteering. This week we’ll look at one of the programs offered by the Mooresville Soup Kitchen (MSK). —EH Stafford, Managing Editor
At MSK we see seniors daily who are on a fixed income. They have worked very hard throughout their lives to provide for themselves. Now, at the age of retirement, they have such limited income that they struggle to make ends meet each month. The Food Movers program was created to address this need in our community.
If we have a person who has no transportation, cannot walk, or has extreme health needs, we conduct a home visit to meet with him/her and learn about their needs. We then match that person with two caring volunteers who deliver healthy fruits, veggies, and other foods weekly. The volunteers interact with the shut-ins, learn of other resources they need, and show compassion and love.

This program has grown in 2019 and we are conducting 3-5 new in-home interviews weekly. As MSK evolves in 2020, this program will be able to reach additional individuals and families in need who cannot access our building. We have been very concerned about how many people are isolated in their homes in our community—this program provides food, love, and dignity to these special seniors.
