The Beard family has lived in Huntersville for eight generations. Collectively, we still own approximately 100 acres near the intersection of Gilead Road and Beatties Ford Road. Because of the growth and changes in the area, it is getting harder to keep that dream from becoming a nightmare. We are doing this by continuing to raise cattle, miniature cows and donkeys, chickens, provide a place to board horses and most recently, built a baseball field and my daughter, Kelly West, started a Farmstead Program called, Rowdy Acres Farmstead. Based on the calls, text, emails and letters our family receives weekly, we could sell at any time. Currently, we are turning them down, hoping to hang on a bit longer against the wave of development sweeping the area. But it is not easy, especially with the increase in traffic that growth causes. (Special thanks goes to everyone that lets me out of my driveway, or lets me cross the road to feed the cows). I can stand in my driveway and point to homes where my brother, sister, niece, nephew, first cousin and second cousin live. Plus, I can get on my golf cart and go to my kids’ homes, that are a short distance away on the property. We are truly blessed.
We don’t begrudge Huntersville, its growth, and in fact, enjoy being able to stay closer to home for shopping and dining. One time, I noticed a car parked on the side of the road and went to see if the people needed assistance. The mom said they did not, stating that her kids had never seen a cow in real life, only in books. So many kids today can’t experience the “farm” life and my family is trying to hold on to that style.
