A dangerous phone scam is now targeting residents across the Lake Norman area, and local citizens are being urged to stay alert. The scam typically begins with a phone call from someone claiming to represent a bank or financial institution. The caller often sounds professional and convincing and may even appear on caller ID as the actual bank because scammers can “spoof” legitimate phone numbers.
The caller usually claims there has been suspicious activity on your account or that someone has attempted to apply for a credit card in your name. Their goal is to create fear and urgency so the victim reacts quickly without thinking. In many cases, the caller asks for sensitive information such as online banking passwords, debit card numbers, PIN numbers, security codes, or one-time authentication texts sent to your phone.
Financial institutions warn that legitimate banks will never ask customers to provide passwords, PINs, or verification codes over the phone. They also will not ask customers to transfer money to another account “for protection.”
If you receive a suspicious call like this, experts recommend hanging up immediately. Do not provide any personal information, and do not call back using a number given by the caller. Instead, contact your bank directly using the phone number printed on the back of your debit or credit card.
Residents are encouraged to share this warning with family members, friends, and especially senior citizens, who are often heavily targeted by phone scams. Staying informed and cautious is one of the best ways to protect yourself and the Lake Norman community from fraud.
