BEAUTY: Repairing Summer Hair

Does your hair look and feel like straw?

After a long hot summer your hair may seem fried, dull, and desperate for hydration. Between the chlorine, the salt water, and the sun — hair becomes stripped of its moisture, natural oils, and color. If you are looking for tips to put life back into your hair and begin the new season with a fresh start, this article is perfect for you.

Tips to Repair Summer Hair

Get a haircut

Whether you have your stylist dust the ends or do a big chop, getting a haircut will get rid of the dead ends and preserve the integrity of your hair. Although a haircut may seem counterproductive if you are trying to grow your hair out, split ends and breakage actually shorten hair overtime. Routine cuts every 6 to 8 weeks will keep hair healthy and help it grow.

Even if you prefer your hair long, a small trim helps keep it healthy

A toner or gloss

If your hair appears dull or brassy, booking a toner or gloss is the perfect way to spruce up the color or add a little shine. Toners are great if you want to correct brassy highlights or revive your color. A gloss, on the other hand, is a clear toner that won’t change your color but will give your hair a beautiful healthy-looking shine.

A scalp treatment

A healthy scalp leads to healthy hair. If you are dealing with a dry flakey scalp or product build up, a scalp detox treatment will nourish the scalp and remove buildup on the hair’s follicle. Removing buildup on the follicle will allow the hair’s natural oils to be released, moisturizing the follicle and promoting hair growth. A scalp treatment can be added to most salon hair services. OPC’s Detoxifying Lotion is a great treatment you can use to give yourself an at home scalp detox. Begin by applying the Detox Lotion on dry hair and massage it into your scalp, leave it on for 5 minutes, rinse, apply an OPC essential oil blend, let sit for 5 minutes, shampoo, and follow with the remainder of your hair care routine.

A conditioning treatment

Whether your hair needs hydration or protein, a hair mask will help give your hair the TLC it needs. If hair appears dry and crisp, a deep conditioning treatment like Evo’s The Great Hydrator or OPC’s Beauty Mask will add hydration back into your hair. Alternatively, if your hair is damaged from chlorine, hot tools, or sun exposure a protein mask such as OPC’s Inca Reconstructive Treatment may be what your hair needs.

As a rule of thumb, you should do a hair mask once a week but make sure to only do a protein mask once a month. Even though protein is great for hair, too much of a good thing is still too much. Deep conditioning or protein masks can be purchased as a product or added to a hair service.
