MIDWEEK CHEERS: 3 Great Places for Craft Beer Around Lake Norman

MidWeek Cheers

Three Breweries. Three Different Experiences. One Good Reason to Raise a Glass.

Craft beer around Lake Norman isn’t just about what’s in the glass anymore.

Local breweries have become gathering places—places to meet friends, enjoy some food, listen to music and sometimes just settle in for an afternoon.

So this week, MidWeek Cheers is visiting three local breweries with three very different personalities.

We’re not declaring a winner.

We’re simply giving you three good reasons to get out and explore.

THE ADVENTURE

Lost Worlds Brewing Company — Cornelius

Walk into Lost Worlds Brewing Company and you’ll quickly understand the name.

The Cornelius brewery was built around the spirit of exploration, with an atmosphere inspired by travel, discovery and the old explorers’ clubs where adventurers gathered to swap stories.

That sense of adventure carries through the taproom—and into the beer.

Why We Like It

Lost Worlds feels like more than a place to grab a beer.

The 95-seat indoor taproom is filled with curios and reminders of faraway places, while the large outdoor biergarten has become one of the brewery’s signature gathering spaces.

It’s comfortable for a couple of friends, but there’s enough room to bring a group and settle in for a while.

What to Expect

Beer, of course—and plenty of variety.

Lost Worlds brews on-site in Cornelius and offers a combination of regular Basecamp beers and rotating Adventure Series selections.

But Lost Worlds has grown beyond beer. Lost Worlds Kitchen adds a full food menu, while Lost Worlds Coffee has turned the same location into a destination from morning coffee through evening beers.

Special Features

Want to know what’s happening behind the taps?

Lost Worlds offers brewery tours at its Cornelius production facility and even Beer School for people who want to learn more about brewing and what’s actually happening inside the glass.

And if you’re looking for entertainment, Lost Worlds has increasingly become a destination for live music and special events as well.

THE GATHERING PLACE

Primal Brewery — Huntersville

Primal has been part of the Lake Norman craft-beer story for more than a decade.

Founded in 2013 and opening its Huntersville flagship in 2014, Primal describes itself as Huntersville’s first brewery.

But longevity isn’t the only reason we’re stopping here.

Why We Like It

Primal feels like a neighborhood gathering place that happens to make its own beer.

There’s an indoor taproom, a German-inspired outdoor beer garden, plenty of room to gather with friends and an atmosphere that encourages you to stay awhile.

And there’s something increasingly unusual about the philosophy here: Primal deliberately doesn’t build the experience around televisions. The idea is conversation, community and actually spending time with the people you’re with.

We like that.

What to Expect

You’ll find a rotating selection of Primal’s own craft beers along with food trucks and plenty of outdoor space.

The beer garden adds games and room to spread out, making Primal an easy choice for groups or a casual afternoon that turns into an evening.

Special Features

Primal keeps its calendar active with live music, comedy and other entertainment, giving you another reason to check what’s happening before heading over.

This weekend is a good example, with entertainment on the Huntersville calendar Friday and live music continuing into Saturday.

So if your idea of craft beer includes a little entertainment and plenty of room to hang out, Primal deserves a stop.

THE AWARD WINNER

Hoptown Brewing Company — Mooresville

At Hoptown Brewing Company, the philosophy is summed up in three words:

Be(er) a Good Neighbor.

That tells you quite a bit about the atmosphere.

But don’t let the friendly neighborhood personality fool you—the beer has some serious credentials.

Why We Like It

Hoptown combines the relaxed feel of a neighborhood gathering place with a brewing program that’s been getting noticed well beyond Lake Norman.

Founders Scott and Sandy began with home brewing before eventually turning that passion into Hoptown.

What to Expect

There’s plenty to explore on tap.

Year-round beers include Wedding Crasher IPA, Sweet Wings Honey Wheat Ale, On The Nines American Lager, Low Tops Hazy IPA and Disco Kid Sour Ale, with seasonal offerings rotating throughout the year.

Food trucks rotate through the brewery, and Hoptown also works with nearby restaurants that can deliver food directly to the taproom.

Special Features

Here’s where Hoptown really earns its place on our list.

Sweet Wings Honey Wheat Ale earned bronze at the 2024 World Beer Cup. Wedding Crasher IPA won gold at the 2024 U.S. Open Beer Competition, and Town Ale took gold at the 2024 North Carolina Brewers Cup.

Hoptown also keeps things lively with trivia, Music Bingo and regular Friday and Saturday live music.

That’s an impressive combination: neighborhood brewery atmosphere with some award-winning beer in the glass.

WHICH ONE ARE YOU TRYING?

That’s the beauty of Lake Norman’s craft-beer scene.

Spend an afternoon exploring Lost Worlds, grab some friends and hang out in Primal’s beer garden, or sample an award-winning brew at Hoptown.

Three towns. Three breweries. Three very different experiences.

And we know these aren’t the only great craft-beer stops around Lake Norman.

What’s your favorite local brewery—and what’s the one beer you’d tell a first-time visitor to try?

Tell us. We may just include your recommendation on our next drinking adventure.

COMING NEXT WEDNESDAY TO LKNCONNECT

MidWeek Cheers is about to become Worth the Pour.

Beginning next Wednesday, the team from Swanky Straw joins LKNConnect with their own show, Worth the Pour—exploring great drinks, interesting destinations and the people and stories behind what we’re drinking around Lake Norman.

Watch for the premiere next Wednesday, only on LKNConnect.com.

MidWeek Cheers is an LKNConnect editorial series exploring the drinks, destinations and local experiences worth raising a glass to around Lake Norman.

I think “Three towns. Three breweries. Three very different experiences.” is a stronger closing now that we have Cornelius, Huntersville and Mooresville represented. And the Worth the Pour teaser gives us a natural handoff to next Wednesday.
