Small Business Knowledge Network w/ Jim Vogel: Different Decks, Same Destiny: The Titanic Truth About Small Business in 2026

Small Business Knowledge Network with Jim Vogel

We all sink together!

In heavy seas, our small businesses may be in different cabins, but in challenging times, we all sink or swim together. Business success has always been about navigating together. This month, just over 144 years ago, we remember tragedy. When the Titanic hit the iceberg, privilege, tuxedos, riches, and cabin assignments didn’t matter much anymore. Whether the passengers were in first class or third, you were sinking on the same ship in the same cold North Atlantic in just two hours and 40 minutes.

In a small business, we sometimes act like we are on different decks. Lucky owners in First Class, brick-and-mortars in Second Class, and the rest in Third Class. Yet we must never forget that if businesses take on water with a cash-flow crunch, a loss of key clients, or a bad reputation, everyone feels it. The 2026 hardened economic iceberg does not stop to ask what position your business has had in the past.

That’s why networking, collaboration, communication, visibility and shared responsibility are not soft skills; they’re survival tools. The “Captain” who does not share information, the first mate who says, “that’s not my job,” or the crew that only looks out for personal success over all others is quietly cracking holes in the hull of the business. On the other hand, if we pull together, share ideas, and watch the horizon for hazards, our organizations have a fighting chance.

For readers of the Small Business Knowledge Network, the message is simple: stop obsessing over whose deck looks nicer and start focusing on the voyage. Share everything that grows the business. Ask for help early. Offer a lifeboat when someone else is struggling. Yes, we all have different roles and different experiences; yet we all are on the same boat, with the same ticket, and the same mission. Together, we keep each other afloat.

If not, we will all sink on the same ship.
