As we roll through the holiday season, it’s important to have your wine selections in order. Depending upon your palate and/or what you are serving for dinner, you need a good red, white and sparkling in your wine cabinet. Here are some suggestions that have made their way onto our menu at Bin 110.
Sparkling – Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs
Translated literally as “White from White,” this California sparkling wine made from chardonnay grapes is perfect as an aperitif or when paired with seafood or aged cheeses, especially Gouda. Don’t let the California moniker fool you. This wine has been crafted in the traditional champagne method since 1965, was served at the “Toast to Peace” with China in 1972, and served at state events by every Presidential administration since. At a price well under many French counterparts, it definitely deserves a seat at your table!
White – Stags’ Leap Estate Chardonnay
Stags’ Leap has been in operation in Napa Valley since 1893, definitely making it one of the elder statesmen of the Napa wine scene. This chardonnay is complex and crisp, presenting light oak and NO maloactic fermentation. The lack of “malo” means the wine retains more of its natural fruit acidity, flavor, and delicacy, and less of the “buttery” taste many expect in a chardonnay.
Phantom
If you are looking for that classic “Oak and Butter” California chardonnay, try Phantom. Bogle is responsible for this classic chardonnay, and the family has been growing grapes in California for six generations. One hundred percent barrel fermentation in French oak barrels, coupled with hand stirring each barrel every two weeks, provides you with the wine you have come to expect from quality Napa chardonnay.
Red – Elévé, Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon
This wine is crafted from “Mountain Fruit” from the Crouse Vineyard on Mt. Veeder. Mountain farming tends to be much more difficult and lower yielding but results in very intense grapes and thus, bold wines. Only 130 cases of this wine were produced. Many well-known labels produce north of 50,000 cases, making this boutique, hand-crafted wine a special treat.
Pouring any of the above wines for family and friends over the holidays will be a big hit. Don’t be afraid to just treat yourself, too!
