Meet The Owner – Courtney Brownewell
Courtney Brownewell and her husband Brian will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in December. They met at NC State where Courtney graduated with a degree in Graphic Design. She worked for a web design firm for four years and also had a job with a local family owned furniture store where she was an assistant manager.
When Brian and Courtney’s first child was born, she elected to stay home to be with their son. While being an at-home mother, Courtney started a hand beaded jewelry business. She had a few wholesale customers and also did craft fairs. In addition, she also did freelance Graphic Design from her home while raising her sons.
Nineteen years ago, Courtney Brownewell, her husband Brian and their four sons left the hectic suburbs of Northern Virginia and moved to Mooresville. Courtney continued her creative vision and opened a booth at an antique mall. She specialized in refinishing used furniture.
One year ago – in April 2024 – Courtney Brownewell followed a dream and opened her own boutique – incorporating all of those creative talents she loves.
“I love retail,” states Courtney with a smile. “I love the creativity to set and stage the store. I love the buying process and pulling things together. I love refinishing the furniture and making things pretty again. But most importantly, I love working with customers and I love the personal connection we make.”
“I feel that you do not need to spend a lot of money to have a home you love.” Brownewell enjoys refinishing furniture for multiple reasons: she loves being creative . . . she appreciates refinishing furniture because she believes that older furniture was made better than today’s furniture – so she wants to ‘rescue’ worn-out furniture from local landfills and make it beautiful again. In addition, she states, “I like finding the unique and making it affordable.”
Brownewell has three employees: Michele Talani, Marta Washam and Lora Smith. Her older boys are supportive of their mom and help out in the store; in addition, her husband Brian assists with fixing furniture that needs repair and finding vintage pieces that can be transformed into beautiful furniture again.
What Do You Like About Mooresville?
When Courtney Brownewell was asked what she likes about Mooresville, she didn’t even hesitate. “Mooresville has the perfect balance – a friendly, small-town feel without being so small that it feels limiting,” states Brownewell. “I love the relaxed, Southern atmosphere and the weather is just right.”
