Ever wonder who decides what the color of the year will be?

I did for many years until I was approached as a designer to be part of CMG (Color Marketing Group). They are a group of designers is all areas of design. From fabrics, to flowers, to carpet, to towels, to dishes — anything that goes into your home that has color.

When I was asked to join CMG, I was manager of Color and Design for Para Paint in Toronto. Today, it’s called Sherwin Williams. It was an honor I never expected. The Color Direction for each year starts with Fashion and then moves into Home Furnishings. It’s a great way to watch what is coming into our homes.

Taking a color trend and transforming it into the Color of the Year

Twice a year the members of CMG meet, about 500-800 professional designers from all over the world. We come with trends. How we feel people are feeling. Our predictions are for two years from that meeting. Both residentially and commercially. Not an easy task!

Color reflects the world around us and what is happening in our lives

CMG members take 6 months to study what has happened, is happening, and what they think might happen. We gather colors to match our feelings of where we feel we are going — colors we have never forecasted before.

When times are tough color leaves us.

We can’t take the stimulation of too much color. Now, we have lived in a grey world for too long. (See 2021 colors here.) We need a color that will give us courage. Be joyful, dramatic and imaginative!

Very Peri, the pantone color of the year 2022.

Is in the indigo family.  I named it years ago as Burple! Very Peri is a much better name. Not only do we create the color but name it. In the Dewey Color System, where I am the executive director, Indigo means “Plan It”.

Indigo gives you enlightened perspectives to create successful plans. “Become mentally fixed on each ingredient you might need to create your idea. You will gain the power to create an orchestrated, exciting future”.

After the last 2 years, we all could use some Very Peri in our lives.

I am not saying paint all your walls in that color. Perhaps add accessories, with that color in it to give you a lift. Pictures, pillows, towels and dishes. Once you understand the Color Meaning, it will help you refocus and plan a happier year.

Lots more colors and happy feelings.

I love the question: How often should you change the colors in your home? As you change, your colors should change. Probably at least every 5 to 7 years. These are only guidelines and directions. Select the colors that make you feel good and give you energy. Let it wrap itself around you and make you happy. A huge thank you to Pantone for all you do for all of us.
