Friday Scam Report – Jury Duty Scam: May 22, 2026

The Friday Scam Report the Jury Duty Scam

A frightening scam is spreading across the country — and it starts with a phone call that sounds completely official.

Victims are receiving calls from people claiming to be law enforcement officers, court officials, or representatives from the local sheriff’s department. The caller says the person missed jury duty, failed to appear in court, or ignored a legal summons. Then comes the threat: there’s now a warrant for their arrest unless immediate payment is made.

Many people panic instantly.

The scammers often sound convincing and may even spoof real phone numbers from local courts or police departments. Some provide fake badge numbers, case numbers, or official-sounding paperwork references to make the situation feel real.

Victims are commonly instructed to pay fines immediately using gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or payment apps to “avoid arrest.” Some are even told officers are already on the way to their home.

IT’S ALL FAKE.

Law enforcement agencies across the country continue warning residents that legitimate courts and police departments do not demand payment over the phone. Real jury duty notices are typically sent through official mail, and no government agency will ask for gift cards or cryptocurrency payments.

RED FLAGS INCLUDE:

• Threats of immediate arrest
• Pressure to stay on the phone
• Demands for instant payment
• Requests for gift cards, Bitcoin, or payment apps
• Callers refusing to let you verify the claim independently

IF YOU RECEIVE ONE OF THESE CALLS:

• Hang up immediately
• Never send money or gift cards
• Contact your local courthouse directly using an official number
• Report the scam to local authorities

Scammers are becoming more aggressive and believable every day. Staying calm and verifying information before reacting could protect both your finances and your peace of mind.

Residents are encouraged to share this warning with family members, friends, and especially senior citizens, who are often heavily targeted by phone scams. Staying informed and cautious is one of the best ways to protect yourself and the Lake Norman community from fraud.
