HEALTHIER YOU: Getting Your Energy Back

How to rest, recover, and get some emotional energy back!

Getting your energy back is part 1 of a 3-part series on self-care throughout the holidays from our naturopathic physician, Dr. Lexi Lain. In addition to helping us silence our negative self-talk in part 1, part 2 is about the science of gratitude and how it affects our health. Part 3 shares excellent advice on not only surviving the holidays with your family, but enjoying them as well! — EH Stafford, Managing Editor

Do you want inner peace, more energy, more time, and better health?

If yes, then the first step is to check in with your thoughts.

Is your self-talk like the “Nightmare Before Christmas?”

Our minds can either make us or literally break us. Do you ever wonder how much time and energy you waste because your thoughts are spiraling into a nightmarish state of overwhelm, depression, or anxiety?

According to the National Science Foundation, the average person has anywhere between 12,000 -60,000 thoughts a day. Of these thoughts, 85% are negative and 95% are repetitive!!

This is a big deal — Why?

Because our thoughts lead to actions and actions will lead to a result.

“I think, therefore I am.” — Renee Descartes

Basically, Descartes has it right. It’s time to clean up the nightmares inside your head and the first step is to become AWARE.

Awareness is the first step

In my previous article, I talked about taking small steps toward a change. [See link below.] Awareness of your thoughts is a great first step.

Once you become aware of how mean you can be to yourself, you then need to be disruptive with those thoughts even if you don’t believe it at first.

Here are some “monstrous” examples

  • I can’t
  • I’m not good enough
  • I don’t have what it takes
  • I’m stupid
  • That person is better than me
  • I’m too old for …
  • There’s no way I can …

We can say things like this multiple times a day and it has an impact.

How much time do you think an average person spends in front of the news?

We know that the news is full of unpleasant, scary things. What do you think it would do for your mental health if you spent the exact same amount of time listening to positive affirmations and uplifting stories?

That is exactly what I’m encouraging you to do.

Here’s how

  • Become AWARE of your negative Self Talk.
  • Abruptly stop it in it’s tracks by saying something like, “Thank you for trying to protect me but I no long believe x,y,z.”

Change isn’t magic. You’ll need to practice.

Now this isn’t going to magically change overnight. This is something you’ll need to work on EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

Beating the villain

If you’ve ever played Mario Brothers, you know that you have to hit Bowser multiple times before he goes down. That’s usually the case with any video game and beating the villain.

While YOU are not the villain, your negative thoughts drain you of energy — just like a villain in a video game.

Conquer the villains in your head with constant positive re-enforcement, positive affirmations, and a “CAN DO” attitude.

You can regain your energy and a positive outlook — saving time, increasing your productivity, and ultimately improving your overall health.

Remember, small steps can create big changes in your life.

Dr. Lexi Lain, ND, is a naturopathic physician who coaches professionals and entrepreneurs around the world on how to transform their health so they can reclaim their lives.

“Taking care of yourself is the success formula to reaching your full potential in business and in life, but it all starts with awareness. Most root causes of dis-ease stem from how we are living our daily lives. Without awareness, we can easily ignore the foundations to health which is a path that can lead us to burnout, exhaustion, and stress. I believe that if I can educate, inspire, and motivate busy professionals to take care of themselves, their new behaviors can impact the health of their teams, families, and community.” — Dr. Lexi Lain, CEO and Naturopathic Doctor
