If you have seasonal allergies, you probably experience a mixture of emotions from excitement that warmer weather is coming, happiness when you see the spring trees in blossom, but also frustration on how this time of year can make you feel. You may suffer from any number of symptoms like sneezing, itchy eyes, a runny nose, congestion, headaches, or even brain fog. Before spring showed up, your energy levels may not have been at optimal but when those pesky allergies hit, it can plummet energy levels below functional lines.
When you inhale tree or grass pollens, your immune system can get triggered, releasing histamines. Histamines can cause you to feel drowsy and can decrease your focus or alertness. When allergies are really bad or when there’s long-term exposure, this can cause chronic inflammation that can affect the body’s energies levels, too.
Many people find relief with over-the-counter medications like Zyrtec, Claritin D, Flonase, among many others. What about natural alternatives?
What could you be doing more naturally to not only calm histamines down but also keep you energized?
There are many natural solutions that help to alleviate allergy symptoms such as local honey, an herb called Nettle, or even a bioflavonoid called quercetin.
In my 10+ years of practicing Naturopathic Medicine, I have found the most powerful and most beneficial thing a practice member can do is identify what foods they are personally sensitive to and eliminate those. Eliminating food sensitivities or foods that trigger a histamine response is far more impactful than any supplement or over-the-counter drug.
The top recommendation to any allergy is to remove exposure and then the person will feel better.
When you eat foods that trigger an immune response, this causes inflammation in the digestive tract and then triggers inflammation in other parts of the body. It also weakens the part of our immune system that fights off infections and increases the allergic side of our immune response, making us more reactive to our environment. It doesn’t matter what condition a person might have, once we identify and eliminate the foods that inflame them, almost everyone feels significantly better.
