What is it?

The phrase might sound familiar, but what is it exactly? Slow Fashion is the entire life cycle of a garment. From how it’s made, the workers who made it, their working conditions, the fabric used, and the sustainability of the item.

Slow Fashion focuses on clothes not being disposable. They are clothes made of quality materials meant to last decades.

How do I practice Slow Fashion?

You don’t need to be an environmentalist to practice Slow Fashion. It’s actually quite simple. Implementing some of the practices below little by little, will allow you to participate without feeling overwhelmed.

Consider purchasing a quality item when buying new.

Shop “Pre-Loved” over New items

Consignment shops are all the rage, so shopping “pre-loved” items is easier than ever. My favorite local shop is Brand Name Consignment in Cornelius, NC. It always has the best inventory.

If you don’t have a great consignment store in your area then check out online sites like Thredup, The Real Real and Poshmark. They’re a great alternative. They have a huge selection of pre-loved items at the click of your mouse.

While you can buy “pre-loved” items online,

Quality over Quantity

Creating a closet with high quality items is a major focus of Slow Fashion. Quality items last longer and in turn create less waste for the environment. It’s an investment that can last decades.

Ask Yourself, “Do I need this or just want this?”

This simple question has saved me from many frivolous purchases. To know if it is a true need, I take inventory of my closest. I look for gaps I may have in my wardrobe. Then when I go shopping, I am buying exactly what I need. Being deliberate in my purchases saves me money, time and waste in the long run.

Choose items that are versatile

I do not buy any item for my closet unless I can come up with at least 3 different ways to use and style it. This helps me to make purchases that create longevity and functionality in my wardrobe. Getting the most wear out of a quality piece is key to sustainability in your wardrobe.

With care and coordination, you too, can have the closet of your dreams!

Create the closet of your dreams

Slow Fashion curates a closet that prioritizes quality, versatility, cost, environmental and ethical sustainability. I can “shop” my closet daily and be creative with what I have since each item was purchased with such care and thought.

Sometimes …

I find myself just sitting in my closet enjoying all the carefully curated pieces. Knowing that I created the closet of my dreams in the most sustainable way possible brings me joy.
