The U.S. National Whitewater Center is a treasure trove of outdoor excitement, known for its zip lines, mountain biking, and even year-round events like the magical Christmas lights experience. But recently, I stumbled upon an event that blends adventure with a culinary twist, and I just couldn’t resist sharing. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to “Paddle to Table,” a dreamy evening that had me kayaking, dining under the stars, and savoring some of the most creative dishes I’ve had in a long time.
What’s better than a serene paddle on the river at sunset? Not much, if you ask me. When I saw that we had the option of choosing between a kayak or a paddleboard, I immediately went for the kayak—I’ve learned from experience that staying dry makes for a much more enjoyable dinner! The evening started with a scenic paddle along the river, and while the water was calm, let’s just say that not everyone managed to stay out of it. (Sorry to the guy who took an unexpected dip—at least it made for a good laugh!) The peaceful surroundings were dotted with wildlife, and the paddle even included a fun little slalom course, adding a playful touch before the main event: dinner.
When the paddling was done, we hiked through a wooded path that led to a charming pavilion, lit up with Edison bulbs and beautifully set tables. Each setting was personalized—mine included a little note about my shellfish allergy (shoutout to Whitewater Center for the attention to detail!). The vibe was intimate and elegant, yet rustic enough to remind us we were still out in nature. Drinks were poured, and the real fun began as the chef-curated courses started rolling out.
Let me tell you, this was not your average campfire meal. The first dish was a watermelon gazpacho that was light, refreshing, and beautifully presented. They even swapped the crab for jackfruit in my dish to accommodate my allergy—talk about going above and beyond. The flavors were fresh, crisp, and unlike anything I’d ever tried before.
Next up? Beef and pork albondigas served with polenta and fried kale (which, by the way, I didn’t think I liked until now). The creativity of the meal was unmatched, and every bite was packed with flavor. By the time dessert arrived—tres leches with sour cherry tamarind sauce and mango ice cream—I was already stuffed, but who could resist? It was decadent, and I savored every spoonful….actually so fast that I didn’t have time to snap a photo! Sorry!
As the Fit Foodie, I’m all about eating real food, the kind that walks, swims, or grows from the ground—simple, whole, and unprocessed. While this meal may not have been low-carb or macro-friendly, I felt confident knowing the ingredients were wholesome and thoughtfully prepared by a chef who respects real food. Sometimes, it’s worth stepping back from calorie counting to enjoy a beautifully crafted meal. It’s about balance, and nights like this remind me that indulging once in a while can be as nourishing for the soul as it is for the body.
In short, the “Paddle to Table” experience at the Whitewater Center is a must-do for anyone who loves adventure and food as much as I do. Whether you’re a foodie, an outdoor enthusiast, or just someone looking for a unique date night, this event has it all. I’ll definitely be back!
