One Paddle Short – But Still Rowing w/ Monica Lucia Hoffman: The History of Moving (and Finding Home Again)

The History of Moving Monica Lucia Hoffman

If there were a museum dedicated to “The Art of Moving,” I’d have my own wing by now. Six moves since July. Six different bedrooms. Six different sets of sheets. Each address marked a chapter in what I like to call “The Great Emotional Storm of 2025.” Lol. The kind that doesn’t just knock out your power—it rearranges your soul furniture, too.

When I tell people I’ve moved six times, they blink twice, as if I’m announcing a marathon of poor decisions. But truthfully, every move was part of the search. You could say I was Goldilocks with a packed SUV—testing each bed, each wall color, each morning light. Some places were too quiet, some too loud, one had neighbors who thought 6 a.m. was a fine time for leaf-blowing therapy. But none felt just right.

Then there were the sheets. Oh, the sheets. You learn a lot about yourself in a year of constant unpacking, but even more when you sleep in 600 thread count confusion. After trying five brands, I landed on Cosco sheets—the coolest, softest, “Did-I-just-wake-up-in-Florence?” kind of luxury that feels like a stolen nap in an Italian villa. Worth every penny and every move it took to find them. I’m not kidding, Cosco.

But somewhere between the boxes, the mattresses, and the small talk with movers who now know my life story, I found something deeper. I found home—not in a zip code, but in a feeling. My new place rests on the water, where the sunsets perform nightly miracles. The sky turns shades of pink, lavender, and gold, as if painting forgiveness right across the horizon.

I still get giddy every evening when the colors change. Maybe it’s the artist in me, maybe it’s the survivor—but those sunsets whisper the same promise every night: you made it through, and tomorrow is waiting for you.

So yes, I’ve moved six times. But I’ve finally arrived.

Still rowing.
