D9’s latest seasonal limited release beer Head of the Horseman is surely going to make heads turn this fall. For the second year in a row, they’ve released this fall brew in late August and it’s blowing my mind. Their instagram (@d9brewinglkn) advertises this brew as:
The perfect beer to “bridge the gap from this horrible hot summer to the beautiful crispness of fall.”
I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely ready for a crisp fall day! Using D9’s signature flavor compounded with spices, fall pumpkin tones, and rich malt profile, this beer is a true delight. It’s refreshing albeit high gravity at 10% ABV.
While this may be the newest beer at D9, they are a long time staple in the Lake Norman Community. Founded in 2014 D9 was started by a group of guys who enjoyed brewing in their garage. They started with a love for the craft and worked their way into owning a brewery. That’s dedication!
Their full name District 9 Brewing combines elements from 1984, The Hunger Games, and District 9 the movie, AND is actually located in North Carolina’s 9th congressional district. How’s that for coincidence? I think not.
D9 has several long term residents including Hakuna Matata (IPA), Swell Rider (session ale), Whiskers on Kittens (sour), and Brown Sugar Brown Cow (brown ale). Aside from all being D9 beer, do you know what else these brews have in common? They are all made with a reduced gluten content.
D9 uses a special enzyme in their brews that clarifies their drinks and has a side effect of reducing the gluten content down to 3-5 parts per million or “gluten-free” levels of below 20 parts per million. Technically it qualifies as gluten-reduced because it’s made with gluten ingredients and not in a dedicated gluten-free facility. Someone with celiac should still be careful, however for the majority of us who just watch our gluten intake, we can potentially drink their beer safely. D9 does not advertise this for their own liability reasons. Please proceed at your own discretion.
All of their brews are based on a handful of signature different and distinct base beer recipes. For example, their brown ale is the base for Brown Sugar Brown Cow, their seasonal Head of the Horseman, and a few others. If you’re having a hard time selecting, their friendly bartenders will be happy to advise. Or just try a flight!
With so many great options to drink and a great taproom in Cornelius, D9 is a local favorite in the LKN area. They often have live music from local and national bands. They host community craft fairs and seasonal expos for local craftsmen to sell their goods. They partner with local nonprofits to give back to the community. D9 is a LKN local business that should be admired both from a distance and up close in their taproom!
