Which is better, consistency or flexibility? 

What’s the secret to getting results when we are chasing a health goal? Maybe you’re trying to cut back on sugar, move your body more, lose 10 pounds, or build more muscle. Often we hear consistency is key. But if your life is anything like mine, consistency can feel a little unrealistic sometimes. We don’t always have full control of our schedules, and every day isn’t the same. I wanted to talk to you today about reframing the way we think of consistency so that we can keep making progress each day, no matter what life throws our way.

When it comes to building healthy habits, we hear a lot about consistency. Picture hitting the gym every day with unwavering commitment. Or, strictly adhering to a healthy meal plan or macro counts, without falling off the wagon. Sounds divine, right? I can hear you shaking your head. But what if consistency doesn’t have to mean rigid routines or never having to miss a workout? 

True success lies in your ability to adapt, to do the best you can given the circumstances. Scale things down if needed, simplify, and maintain your positive mindset to still show up for yourself in whatever way you can. Here are some examples:

  • Scale Things Down

When life gets busy, instead of that gym workout you enjoy, moving your body can become a 10 minute YouTube workout at home or in the hotel room. A simple combo of bodyweight squats, push-ups, or a stretching routine. While these aren’t the same as an intense workout at the gym, they are still incredibly effective in lowering your blood sugar, lighting up the brain with feel good neurotransmitters, and feeding that positive mindset. 

  • Simplified Meal Choices

If prepping a homemade healthy meal isn’t an option, don’t let that be a reason to completely throw in the towel. Healthier choices are everywhere if you look for them. Choosing a grilled protein over fried is an easy go-to option, and with grocery stores on every corner, buying premade salads or creating your own combo of fresh fruit, cheese, whole grain crackers, or some lean protein from the deli counter, is always an option. 

  • Mindset Shifts

When we experience a day that doesn’t allow for our regular healthy habits or routines, one of the best things we can do is challenge ourselves to think in a more positive mindset. We can ask ourselves, “What can I do today?” instead of “I have to stick to my exact plan.” Something as simple as making the extra effort to stay hydrated not only never hurts, but is actually something that is often overlooked on even our best days. A positive mindset that focuses on the gains you are making and avoids the negative thought patterns of where you have come up short will help keep you from believing you have wandered too far off the path to keep making progress. Every day is a fresh start, and even your next decision can be a step in the right direction.

Remind yourself that consistency thrives when you embrace flexibility. This approach can help you stay on track without the all-or-nothing mindset that can derail progress. Consistency through flexibility is the key to obtaining lasting results.
