Pelvic pain is a deeply personal and often debilitating condition that affects many women. As a pelvic floor therapist, I have worked with countless individuals navigating this challenge. According to the NIH, chronic pelvic pain impacts 4-16% of women, significantly disrupting daily life. Unfortunately, many endure years of discomfort due to misdiagnosis or intermittent symptoms, seeking help only when the pain becomes unbearable. Conditions such as endometriosis, painful menstrual cycles, interstitial cystitis, irritable bowel syndrome, vulvodynia, and vaginismus—along with cancer treatments and hormonal changes—can all contribute to pelvic pain.
One of the most profound consequences of pelvic pain is its impact on intimacy. It can strain relationships, increase anxiety, and lead to emotional distress. Many women experience painful muscle spasms that make vaginal touch intolerable, while others struggle with the muscle relaxation necessary for normal sexual function. Vaginismus, whether lifelong or acquired due to trauma or medical treatments, further complicates intimacy. Additionally, cancer treatments, hysterectomies, and hormonal changes can cause dryness, pain, and reduced sexual function—issues that are often overlooked in medical discussions.
Thankfully, pelvic pain can be managed with:
✔ Stress reduction and diaphragmatic breathing
✔ Pelvic floor therapy and muscle relaxation techniques
✔ Gentle stretching for hips, back, and abdomen
✔ Vaginal wands/dilators and proper lubrication
✔ Open communication with a partner
✔ Mental health support and staying active
You don’t have to suffer in silence. Pelvic floor therapy can help restore intimacy and improve your quality of life. Contact me for a free consultation.
