WellBEing Wins w/ Debbey Woodruff: Are you a Resolution Person?

If you’re like 30–50% of the U.S. population, you start the year with a resolution.
And if you’re like many others, you’ve also noticed… they don’t always last.

In fact, less than 1% of people keep their resolutions for an entire year. Many are abandoned within the first 30 days (depending on the survey, anywhere from 8–75% fall off by month one).

And yet—the desire is real.

People genuinely want to:

  • Feel healthier
  • Experience more financial security
  • Build stronger, more meaningful connections

(These are consistently the top reasons people set resolutions.)

So why do so many resolutions get orphaned so quickly?

The “Fail-ution”

The issue isn’t desire.
It’s method.

There are three proven ways to dramatically increase your chances of success:

  1. Turn resolutions into intentions
  2. Build habits that support them
  3. Add accountability

Intentions vs. Resolutions:

On paper, the words are similar.

  • Resolution: “A personal expression of will or intent, especially in pursuit of a goal.”
  • Intention: “A determination to act in a certain way.”

But emotionally? They feel very different.

According to Gallup, about 70% of decisions are driven by emotions. That means how something feels matters more than how logical or well-planned it is.

Intentions feel more forgiving and less pass/fail. They speak to direction and focus – something you can reset when sidetracked.

Build a Habit

Research shows that about 40% of our day is driven by habits—automatic behaviors we repeat without thinking.

To implement your intention, you just need to align small actions by asking:

  • Is this action aligned with my intention?
  • What’s one small thing I can do today to support it?

Example:
If your intention is to exercise more:

  • Park farther from store entrances
  • Choose walking dates instead of coffee dates

Each choice that supports your intention counts as a win. Small wins add up.

Add Accountability

When I was a teenager, a friend and I called each other every morning.
The call lasted 60 seconds—just long enough to remind each other to stick with our resolution.

We were in the 1% who made it the whole year.

Every year after, without that accountability? I didn’t.

Accountability works. Try:

  • A text
  • A quick check-in
  • A shared goal tracker

The bonus? Accountability strengthens connection, which is a key ingredient of overall wellBEing.

So… What Will You Choose?

  • A resolution or an intention?
  • Building habits around it?
  • Adding accountability?

What’s one step you can take today toward the thing you truly want?

Remember:
Every step counts.
Every aligned choice is a win.
Celebrate progress. Don’t give up.

The transformation isn’t just in the destination—it’s in the journey toward WellBEing
