Lessons of the Christmas Tree is part 3 of a 3-part series on the holidays and self-care from our naturopathic physician, Dr. Lexi Lain. In addition to helping us silence our negative self-talk in Part 1 – Getting Our Energy Back, part 2, Gratitude and Happiness, is about the science of gratitude and how it affects our health. — EH Stafford, Managing Editor
I just attended the Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Town Center in Cornelius. I’ve also been busy decorating not only my own Christmas tree but also trees for the Davidson Rotary’s Giving Tree Village. Local businesses pair up with a Non-Profit to raise money in support of each organization. Being a part of the Giving Tree is a real joy. There’s community, celebration, and an opportunity to give.
“Maybe Christmas, the Grinch thought, doesn’t come from the store. Maybe Christmas … perhaps … means a little bit more”
– Dr. Seuss
While decorating my tree at home, childhood memories dance around in my mind as I hang a cute bear from my grandma. I think of her and all the magical times we shared every time I see it.
Adult memories of various adventures come back to life as I hang ornaments from faraway places. If you’re a parent, you’ll hang your children’s first- and second-year decorations along with all the following years to come.
During this season of love and celebration with your family, as you look upon your Christmas tree … What emotions and memories come to mind? Do you feel comfort, joy, and peace?
“O Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum … Your hope and durability provide comfort and strength at any time.”
What beautiful lyrics we all need to hear.
Christmas always makes me reflect on my life. No matter what’s going on around me, when all is quiet and dark, it’s the light of the Christmas tree that brings me hope and comfort. I have compiled a list of lessons this evergreen has taught me through the years.
May you and your family have a lovely and joyful Christmas around your tree.
“It’s not what’s under the Christmas tree that matters, but the people who are around it.”
– Charles M Shultz
But only if you plug into an energy source. What are you plugging into that brings you hope and peace?
To happy and joyful times. It’s a living scrapbook of memories.
And yet strong no matter the storm that comes.

The most precious gift is our time. Choose to spend it with family and friends. Don’t wait, be the first to call or visit and share the joy of the season.
The best gift you can give someone is the joy their gift brings to you. Watching your face light up gives the giver so much pleasure.

Dr. Lexi Lain, ND, is a naturopathic physician who coaches professionals and entrepreneurs around the world on how to transform their health so they can reclaim their lives.
“Taking care of yourself is the success formula to reaching your full potential in business and in life, but it all starts with awareness. Most root causes of dis-ease stem from how we are living our daily lives. Without awareness, we can easily ignore the foundations to health which is a path that can lead us to burnout, exhaustion, and stress. I believe that if I can educate, inspire, and motivate busy professionals to take care of themselves, their new behaviors can impact the health of their teams, families, and community.” — Dr. Lexi Lain, CEO and Naturopathic Doctor
