It is also a way to give back to the community! Not only do the students learn their preferred style of dance throughout the year, they also come together annually and deliver four amazing performances of The Nutcracker to raise money for charity – this year, the proceeds are donated to The Dove House.
Sadie Roberts-Doughton, owner and director of the studio, believes our youth gain confidence, strength and courage through dance. She also firmly believes a dancer’s talent can be shared in a way to help others.
The first event of the season was the Nutcracker Benefit Holiday Market that was held at The Academy of Dance and Fine Arts on November 13th. It was an outdoor festival filled with fall games, face painting, food trucks and vendors selling unique and creative gifts. A raffle was held for over a dozen gift baskets and the proceeds donated to The Dove House.
I was able to see the dancers prepare for their performances and witness the joy and enthusiasm that comes from the combination of energy, excitement and the incredible “organized chaos” flowing from room to room as all of the dancers seem united in their love of dance.
“Dancing fills my heart with joy.”
Ten-year-old Lexi Sims
After the performance, 4-year-old Eliza Smith smiled proudly as she said, “I love dancing with my friends.“ Their elation is palpable.
On November 14th, the dancers performed in the Lakefront Ballroom at Trump National Golf Club. Families purchased tickets and children witnessed the show, up close and personal, while also enjoying tea and sweet treats.
It was an elegant and wonderful success. During the afternoon, young children in the audience mingled with the ballerinas and dreamed of one day being on stage too.

The Academy opened its doors in 1977. The owner at the time was Karen Sherrill Deese. When Ms. Deese moved to South Carolina in 2009, Sadie Roberts-Doughton (who was a dance instructor at the time) purchased the business.
“Dance was, is, always has been and always will be my life,” says Sadie Roberts-Doughton.
“It was a goal and a life-long dream to have my own studio.”
When the opportunity to purchase the studio came up, Roberts-Doughton had to take it. “This place is a blessing. It’s been a staple in the community for over 40 years. We have students whose parents were also students plus teachers who are ADFA alumni. It’s just this amazing family that keeps growing!”
Currently there are 125 dancers focused on ballet and a total of 250 students enrolled in various dance programs with ADFA. They range in age from 4-years-old to 18. The fourteen instructors teach a wide variety of dance styles including: Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Lyrical, Modern, Contemporary, Hip-Hop and Floor Gym.
