Fast Food Dining Guide

The Fit Foodie’s Fast Food Survival Guide

Fast food: it’s not an everyday thing—it’s a “holy crap, I left my lunch on top my car this morning” kind of thing. Life happens, and when it does, knowing how to navigate the drive-thru without derailing your health goals is essential. But don’t worry, I’ve got your back with this guide to making smart, tasty choices on the fly.

Chipotle: The Fast Food Gold Standard

If you have to hit a fast-food spot, Chipotle is your best friend. Why? Because you get options—salad, burrito, or rice bowl—packed with fresh, whole foods and no weird additives. Their sourcing game is strong, and everything is customizable. Skip the cheese, go light on the rice, and pile on the veggies and lean proteins. If only every fast food joint had their priorities straight, right?

But let’s be real—sometimes, Chipotle isn’t in the cards, and you’ve got 10 minutes to eat something that won’t haunt you later. Here’s how to keep it healthy, even at less-than-ideal places.

Bread Is (Usually) Bad News

Let me just say it: skip the bread. Most fast-food buns are highly processed, empty calorie bombs. I mean, unless you’re sitting at Texas Roadhouse and the rolls just came straight down from heaven, it’s not worth it. Instead, opt for a lettuce wrap—these days, almost every restaurant offers it. Wraps, by the way, are NOT the healthier alternative you think they are. They’re often just as high in calories as buns and gluten free or whole wheat doesn’t really equal healthier either.

Fat Happens—Pick One

When it comes to toppings, it’s okay to indulge a little. BUT, pick one fat-filled flavor booster—either cheese or dressing, not both. If you’re team mayo, skip the cheese. Love cheese? Then hold the dressing or opt for something lighter. And listen, if you’re ordering a salad, get the dressing on the side. Dip each bite instead of drenching the whole thing—trust me, you’ll use way less and still get all the flavor. You’re welcome.

Fried Foods: Be Smart About It

If you really must have fried chicken, balance it out elsewhere—skip the cheese, bread, and sauces. And yes, I know, French fries are delicious, but let’s talk about those sneaky little spuds. Fast-food fries are often chemical-laden disasters, loaded with more than just potatoes, oil, and salt. If you can, swap them for a side salad or fruit cup. Or, pro tip: stop at a gas station and grab an apple, orange, or banana before you hit the drive-thru! It’s weird, but it works.

Salad not always the Saint

Salad: Not Always the Saint

Here’s the tea—just because it’s a salad doesn’t mean it’s healthy. In fact, fast-food salads are often worse than the burgers! Case in point: a Big Mac has 680 calories and 38 grams of fat. Meanwhile, McDonald’s kale salad sounds saintly but sneaks in 730 calories and 53 grams of fat. Their crispy chicken salad? A jaw-dropping 1200 calories—nearly two Big Macs. So, don’t be fooled by leafy greens with hidden junk; sometimes, the burger is the better choice.

Pro Tip: Get Creative

If you’re serious about ditching bread and want to level up, try this: hollow out a cucumber and use it as a bun. Yep, a cucumber. It’s crisp, hydrating, and oddly satisfying. You’ll thank me later.

General life pro tip…..Always order water not only does it save your waistline but your wallet too.  A family of four can save $12-$15 a meal just drinking water not to mention almost 1,000 calories.  It is the little things that make a difference!

Fast Food, but Make It Fit Foodie

Fast food isn’t ideal, but when life throws you a curveball, you can still make smart choices. Skip the bread, balance the fats, avoid the fried stuff when you can, and don’t be fooled by salads. Remember, eating well is about being mindful, even when you’re in the drive-thru. And hey, if nothing else, at least you’ve got this guide—and my cucumber bun hack—to keep you on track. Happy eating, friends!  P.S. If you want a full restaurant guide just reach out and I will send you the one I give my W.I.N. program ladies.  Smooches!
