Tucked between Food Lion and The Cozy Boutique – in the same shopping center as Ace Hardware on Brawley School Road — is a new eatery: The Counter.
The food is delicious . . . the choices are diverse, the prices are good, the service is great and the ambiance is inviting . . . perfect for take-out or eating in the facility.
Breakfast is served from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Don’t forget – The Counter is a great place to pick up a cup of coffee too! Lunch is served from 11:00 to 3:00. (Monday through Saturday)
In addition to the delightful choices on the menu for both breakfast and lunch, The Counter will be offering “Hot & Ready” dinner specials – starting in late August. “We will display a nightly special on our online page where you can order your dinner and pick it up warm between 4:00 and 6:30.” Diane adds, “The busy Mom/Dad’s DREAM COME TRUE!”
Opening Day was Tuesday August 2nd. Owner Diane Pfeil hired ten employees and fondly refers to them as “The Counter Crew.” The first week of business; most of them worked the entire day.
The Counter was busy from Day One! As a result, Diane plans to hire at least five more servers and three more in the kitchen.
When asked “What is your favorite item on the menu?” Diane enthusiastically replies, “ALL of them!”
After researching numerous deli menus all over the country, Diane collaborated with her family and created these excellent choices. “Coming from New York,” Diane grins, “I guess you can say I am a foodie.”
Diane adds, “My chef, Shane Smith, tweaked the menu with his various house-made sauces and special touches.” I think the pastrami and classic breakfast egg sandwich is probably going to be the biggest hit.”
Patrons Karen and Michael Walker are thrilled to have The Counter so close to their home. They already declare themselves loyal customers. “The food is great!”
“I have seen many postings on social media,” states Diane. “I am truly overwhelmed with the tremendous support we are getting from our community already.”
Originally from the suburbs of Rockland, New York, Diane and her husband Don moved to Mooresville eighteen years ago. The couple — who will be celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary in September — have two grown children: Alyson (27) who is a Sales Program Manager at Crowdstrike in Sunnyvale, California and Alex (24) who is in Medical School at UNC Chapel Hill.
“We are a good team,” Don states proudly. “However, Diane is the magic.”
The Counter is not Diane’s first rodeo. Not only did she own and operate a “local Irish pub” style restaurant in her hometown in New York for more than twenty years, she also owned and operated a Building Blocks Daycare Center AND a Stepping Stones Preschool.
Pfeil juggled all three businesses while also being a mom .“Between the daycare and the preschool, I had over 100 children enrolled,” states Diane. “When we decided to move to North Carolina, I thought it would be impossible to run all three businesses from out of state, so I sold the restaurant and preschool. I ran the daycare for seventeen years while living in N.C.”
Diane considered her day care business to be ‘her baby.’ After twenty-three years in business, she sold it on December 1, 2022 – one month after signing the lease for The Counter. “Call me crazy, right!” Diane chuckles.
“Mooresville is the best!” states Diane emphatically. “Our community has so much to offer — whether you are looking to hang out on the lake, go shopping, play tennis and/or golf — there is so much to do. It is easy to call Mooresville home.”
