Widow’s Den w/ Monica Lucia: Feature Story: Turning Grief into Guidance

For most of my life, I’ve been an entrepreneur — building, creating, and leading my own businesses since the age of 18. With two patents to my name and a successful career in medical supplies, I spent decades helping physicians and patients live healthier, more independent lives. But when loss entered my own life, everything changed.

After the passing of my husband, I faced a crossroads that no amount of business success could have prepared me for. The confusion, the paperwork, and the pain that families face after losing a loved one revealed a gap I couldn’t ignore. I wanted to make sure there wasn’t one family that didn’t know what to do after their loved one passed, because grief is challenging enough — what to do next shouldn’t be.

That realization became my life’s mission. I became a Grief and Bereavement Counselor, determined to transform my pain into purpose and my grief into a gift. I founded Widow’s Den, a compassionate community designed to help individuals and families find strength, support, and direction after loss. What began as a lifeline for me soon became one for others — a space where healing meets hope.

My journey has also taken shape through my writing. I am the author of three published books on grief and end-of-life planning, which have been embraced by funeral homes nationwide, with hundreds of copies purchased to help guide families through one of life’s most difficult transitions. My newest release, Charlie’s Story: A Children’s Grief Book for Neurodivergent Children, is a resource that helps young readers understand loss in a gentle, inclusive way, offering comfort and understanding for both children and caregivers navigating grief together.

Today, I work with Everstory Partners at Iredell Memorial Park as a Family Service Counselor, helping families get their “ducks in a row” before the unthinkable happens. I guide them through pre-need arrangements so their wishes are honored and their loved ones are spared from financial or emotional burdens during a time of grief, creating peace of mind through emotional preparation, practical organization, and financial readiness — a final gift of love to their families.

In addition to my counseling work, I am a writer and columnist for LKN Connect. I contribute to Widow’s Den, where I share heartfelt reflections on healing and growth, and to One Paddle Short (But Still Rowing), my satirical, witty take on life, love, and Lake Norman — because sometimes humor is the bridge between heartache and healing
