SELF-CARE: Are You Rumbly in Your Tummy? Solutions for Better Digestion

The digestive system begins in the mouth and is the topic of many jokes. All kidding aside—if the digestive tract isn’t “flowing” properly, it can cause major congestion. This article offers solutions. Since everyone’s body is unique, not all the suggestions in this article will work for everyone. There are several ways to help the digestive tract begin moving again if it has been slow or stagnant. Here are some suggestions to help the body digest better.

  1. Chew your food slowly, and drink plenty of water. Since digestion begins in the mouth, start with deliberately chewing your food slowly. Swallowing big chunks of food makes the body work harder to digest it. And drink plenty of water.

  1. Fiber! What exactly is fiber? It’s roughage that helps keep your digestive system clean and healthy, keeps you regular, and flushes toxins out of the body. Some foods that many people are willing to eat that help increase fiber intake are: berries, popcorn (organic), apples, avocados, real whole grains, potatoes, and nuts. Eating veggies is a great way to increase fiber, too. If you’re not a fan of veggies, try putting them in a daily smoothie.

  1. Take digestive enzymes. Fiber is necessary, but it can also lead to lots of bloating if your digestive system is out of balance. Most of us don’t want to admit that we have an out-of-balance digestive tract. Once you begin to eat healthier food, your digestive tract may let you know quickly it was out of balance. If you are having trouble digesting your food, try taking some digestive enzymes. The best quality digestive enzymes are found through a naturopathic or functional medicine doctor. There are some good quality ones in health food stores as well. Just be cautious with the supplements you are buying. Please make sure they are very good quality.

  1. Try homeopathy. Homeopathy is based on the notion that if you give the body what it truly needs, such as plants and minerals, it can bring healing to the body. It’s fascinating! You can find homeopathic pellets that can help aid with digestion in health food stores. There are specific ones for large and small intestine, depending on where your bloating is occurring. A brand that I have used for years is Boiron. Please do your own research.

  1. Try bodywork. You might be wondering how bodywork can help your digestive tract. There are moves in Bowen and Emmett Techniques that can help the body release the bloating and get the digestive tract moving properly again. These moves are done lightly over clothing on certain points. With some moves, you can begin to hear the digestion start, which is a good sign. You want to hear the body digesting in a good way. It means you’re relaxed.

These are just a few suggestions for beginning the process of helping your digestive tract function properly. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to have a properly functioning digestive tract. If it doesn’t get moved out like it should, toxins can be reabsorbed back into the body. You don’t want this. Find a solution that you will do consistently to help you become regular if you are not.
