Although the Club’s name implies that members are new to the Lake Norman area, in actuality, many of the 350 members have lived here for years – some are even “natives.” All ladies are welcome to join. For more information: https://lknnewcomers.wildapricot.org/
“Our Mission,” states President Andi Marshall “is to promote friendship through social activities and to help make the Mooresville/LKN community a better place to live.”
On the first Wednesday of every month (except July and December) the ladies meet at Rocky Mount UMC – 1739 Perth Road. Guests are always welcome.
At each monthly meeting the Club invites a guest speaker to address the members — a wide variety of topics are broached including health, history, education and community news. During 2022, the guest speakers have included Vickie Sawyer, our North Carolina state senator for District 34, who spoke to the group about infrastructure and highway projects in our area. Police Officer Dave Harding, who spoke to the group about safety and scams, was extremely informative and gave the ladies tips about staying safe.
In early 2022, Randy Herman spoke about projects in the Town of Mooresville.
Additional speakers have been local authors, health professionals and there was even a fashion show put on by The Give Back Boutique using Newcomer members as the models. (See the amazing video later in this article)
Monthly meetings are a fabulous perk; however, they are only the tip of the iceberg. Each month, a newsletter goes out to the members with a Calendar of Events such as book clubs, bowling, bunco, chick flicks, golf, kayaking, card games, mahjong, needle work, out-to-lunch bunch, pickle ball, hiking, cooking, genealogy, and garden club.
Member Kim Meredith Jeffery hosts a flower arranging class in her home. Allison Boggs of Dazzling Designs teaches the ladies how to create a beautiful centerpiece.
There are activities for every day of the week. Members can choose to be as busy and involved as they wish to be. In addition, monthly excursions take members to wonderful locations – sometimes – even overnight adventures.
Every month, there are excursions; for example, a charcuterie board demonstration by LKN Butchery; “shop ‘til you drop” trip to Charlotte Premium Outlets, exploring Daniel Stowe Gardens and visits to wineries including one near Boone and the girls stayed overnight. It rained part of the day, but they didn’t let the weather dampen their spirits or their experience.
Every December, the ladies gather for a Holiday Luncheon.
This year the event was held at The River Run Country Club in Davidson — a gorgeous venue. There was an open bar. The menu choice was salmon, a spinach pasta dish or chicken — all delicious.
Beautiful gift baskets were donated by sixteen different “Interest Groups” and raffled off during the event. In addition, there was a surprise visit from Santa who came bearing gifts and saying “thank you” to the Board members for another great year.
It was a festive, fabulous way to celebrate friendship and enjoy time together.
The LKN Newcomers members believe strongly in giving back to the community. Many of the members volunteer at the Christian Mission and the Give Back Boutique. In addition, on a monthly basis, volunteers read to students at Parkview Elementary School and members donate food to the Sherrills Ford Pantry. Plus, once a year, members vote on which nonprofits receive a donation from LKN Newcomers.
One of the most beloved giving traditions for Newcomers Club members is the Christian Mission Holiday Bags. Members shop and create a bag full of items that Seniors need and/or enjoy. The “reusable” bags are wrapped in clear plastic, tied with a bright bow and given to The Christian Mission — they will — in turn — give those bags to Seniors in the Mooresville area. For many, this Holiday Bag is the ONLY present he/she receives during the Holidays. This year, the goal was 150. The ladies exceeded that goal and brought 167 bags to the Holiday Luncheon.
The Christian Mission has been helping those in need by “offering hope, empowering people and fighting poverty” in the Mooresville area since 1939. If you want to be part of the solution — click https://ourchristianmission.org/
The Give Back Boutique is another way to donate your time and have fun too. Many members find great joy in volunteering at this creative and classy consignment boutique plus the volunteers get to see the clothes when they arrive.
Those who donate get to clean out their closets and make a little extra money + shoppers find gorgeous clothes and accessories at bargain prices + the proceeds go to The Christian Mission to help local families in need. Win! Win! Win for everyone!
In November, The Lake Norman Newcomers Club had a Fashion Show hosted by The Give Back Boutique. The members of the LKN Newcomers Club were the models for the event. The proceeds of the sales at the boutique go to The Christian Mission – truly an inspirational, wonderful day for all involved.
Check out the short video of the Give Back Boutique Fashion Show that was held at the LKN Newcomers monthly meeting in November.
At the close of every monthly meeting, President Andi Marshall gives a ‘Thought for the Day’ quote – always motivational and inspiring.
“I am honored to be part of such a fabulous group of supportive women who help enrich each other’s lives in so many ways. We help each other through the good times and the bad, contribute toward our communities and local nonprofits, and look for ways to bring joy to ourselves and others,” declares Andi Marshall, President LKN Newcomers Club.
