Fantasy Football Article – Week 9

QB Tua Tagovailoa returned in week 8 and based on his performance you can play your Miami Dolphins WRs, Tyreek Hill and Jayden Waddle, and RBs, De’Von Achane and Raheem Mostert, with confidence.  Tagovailoa should only get better with more playing time although he has a tough matchup this week at the Buffalo Bills.  Week 8 not only saw the return of Los Angeles Rams WR Cooper Kupp, but WR Puka Nacua who picked up right where he left off.  QB Matthew Stafford is now a low-end starter and a solid bye week replacement option.

The San Francisco 49ers are on a bye week 9.  The expectation is that RB Christian McCaffrey will make his long-awaited debut in week 10.  This will relegate RB Jordan Mason to the bench.  Mason injured his shoulder in week 8 but head coach Kyle Shanahan said he should be fine.  His replacement, RB Isaac Guerendo, ran like a bull but also showed his speed against the Dallas Cowboys.  He is worth stashing on your roster in larger leagues and would be a solid replacement if McCaffrey and Mason become injured.

The Carolina Panthers are a terrible team but play better with Andy Dalton at QB instead of Bryce Young.  Regardless of who plays QB, Chuba Hubbard has been serviceable at RB.  However, this may be ending as highly touted rookie RB Jonathan Brooks is expected to make his debut.  The Panthers also just traded their number one WR, Diontae Johnson, to the Baltimore Ravens.  This is a solid move for the Ravens but hurts the fantasy value of WRs Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman, and TEs Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely.

QB Jameis Winston started for the Cleveland Browns in week 8 replacing the injured Deshaun Watson.  Just like Joe Flacco did last season when he replaced Watson, Winston showed what this passing game is capable of and led the Browns to an upset victory over the Baltimore Ravens.  Winston can have big games but has a history of turnovers due to his gunslinger mentality.  WR Cedric Tillman is a worthy waiver wire pickup with Winston at QB.

WR Stefon Diggs of the Houston Texans has a torn ACL and is out for the year.  The Texans are now missing their top two WRs with Nico Collins already out.  This significantly increases the value of WR Tank Dell.  Who will step up?  Unknown.  Potential players are Robert Woods, Xavier Hutchinson, and John Metchie III.

Week 8 Selections Versus the Point Spread

Minnesota Vikings (-3.5) at Los Angeles Rams Final Score: LAR 30  Minn. 20

Dallas Cowboys (+4.5) at San Francisco 49ers Final Score: SF 30  Dal. 24

Pittsburgh Steelers (-6.5) vs. New York Giants Final Score: Pitt. 26  NYG 18

Week 8 Record:  1 – 2 Season Record:  12 – 12

Week 9 Selections Versus the Point Spread

Houston Texans (+2.0) at New York Jets

It is hard to believe the Jets are favored based on the play of their offense and defense, neither of which have lived up to expectations.  The Texans have also struggled especially without WR Nico Collins and now Stefon Diggs.  This game is a tossup. I will take the points based on the advantage the Texans have with PK Ka’imi Fairbairn over any new Jets kicker.

Indianapolis Colts (+6.0) at Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings have lost two straight games and opponents seem to have figured out Brian Flores’ defense.  I am again taking the points since the Colts are starting QB Joe Flacco over Anthony Richardson.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+8.5) at Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs keep winning thanks to their defense, but they are not blowing anyone away.  The Buccaneers showed last week they can still score without their top two WRs.  However, their defense is nothing to write home about.  Kansas City will win but it feels like 8.5 is too many points.
