Gym Ettiquet for Everyone

Gentlemen’s Corner – The Official GYM ETIQUETTE Guide for all!

I’ve been going to the gym since high school. I have met some great guys who have become very good friends over the years. That comradery I learned early on has made me a better gym member and frankly a better human. The unspoken rules, the process and frankly ‘the way you work out’ is important to everyone around you. However, lately, I’ve not seen that same commitment to doing it right. I blame the gyms. I blame the internet. I felt compelled to share my view on what being a gym ‘goer’ should include.

It’s about the gym community

Over the past 8-10 years, there have been an influx of new gym members, mostly high school and college students. On one hand, I am glad to see them there, trying to get strong and healthy. On the other hand, too many are there for the wrong reasons. If you are new to the gym OR your kids are going without you, PLEASE consider the following points of gym etiquette. For the record, the bad actors are not always the kids…

  1. Learn how to do the exercise correctly. There are an unlimited amount of workout books, videos and pages on the Internet. Knowing how to do an exercise correctly is more important than how much you lift. Significant injury or minimal gains could be the result of poor form. If you are not sure. ASK!
  2. Don’t worry about ‘how many plates’ you put on a machine. You are not impressing anyone by putting on more weight than you can handle and then screaming for help. Know your limits. No one cares how much you can lift, especially if you are only doing one rep anyway.
  3. Put your weights back. Gym protocol in every gym I have ever been to is to return your weights to the rack when you are done. No one is there to pick up after you. Do the right thing.
  4. Clean the equipment. If you are a ‘heavy sweat’ kind of guy, wipe it down please. No one wants to sit in your mess.
  5. Move quickly through your workout. Especially on busy days, please be aware that others are waiting. 5 minutes between sets is much too long. 60-90 seconds of rest is what most trainers will say is plenty.
  6. Stay off your phone. I know most of us use our phones for music. Got it. But keeping with the last point, keep moving. Checking email, social media and texting is not cool during your workout. Stay focused and get through the exercise without other distractions.
  7. Working out with a group. If there are 3-4 of you working on a single piece of equipment, do me a favor, split up in 2 groups OR make sure someone is on the equipment at all times. Chatting it up or sharing videos during the workout makes the equipment unavailable to the rest of us. Please be respectful of others who want to use it.

8. Learn the correct way to spot. Everyone needs a little extra help every now and then. When a buddy needs a ‘spot’ make sure you know what he really needs. Make them work but don’t have them struggle. The key is to keep the bar or the dumbbells moving. Small amounts of help along the way prevent injury as well. Always pay attention through the entire exercise.

9. New to gym? Hey welcome! We love having new gym members. A busy gym is a great environment if everyone follows the rules. Not sure about an exercise or want to ask for help? Please do. I have had many guys come up to me and ask my opinion or for help with an exercise. If you are respectful and truly want the help, I know most of us will be happy to share what we know.

10. Find a workout buddy. Having someone with similar goals to push you and keep you on task can mean all the difference in a workout. I have had many partners over the years that have taught me many things and hopefully I have helped them as well. The brotherhood in the gym is so important and could last for years.

Now get out there and LIFT!

I hope I didn’t sound too much like the old guy but this all needed to be said. I encourage everyone to get to the gym and meet or exceed their goals. You need to know the rules and play by them. Just like in every other environment, doing the right thing makes everyone’s experience a better one. Parents, if your kids go to the gym without, please show them this list. Explain to them how important they all are. If you an adult and just getting back into it, this hopefully was a good refresher. At the end of the day, I want to encourage good gym etiquette for everyone. Keeping your body healthy and strong is important your whole life. Start early and do your part to make everyone’s experience a positive one.

Take care of yourselves and your brotherhood!
