In my close to two decades of being in Human Resources, the most popular question I continue to get is what is a typical day for me.
Short answer – there is no typical day in HR. Every day is different, and every day is a challenge. Some days are more fun than others, but they are never boring! There are several key functions that HR has to maintain and lead.
First and foremost, HR leaders have the crucial task of being the voice of the employees, as well as keeping the company’s best interest in mind. We manage pay and benefits, create opportunities for professional development, and foster a positive work environment. We are also the first line of defense regarding labor laws making sure the company stays on top of regulations, updating policies, and helping the company avoid costly mistakes.
Secondly, we are in charge of strengthening and maintaining company culture. HR sets the tone for how employees interact, communicate, and collaborate with one another. It’s important that the workforce is engaged and feels connected through the various opportunities provided by HR that support and encourage positive interactions.
Another big responsibility is making sure the employees feel supported and maintain a healthy mental well being. That includes managing benefits and wellness programs and shaping work policies that prioritize the workforce’s well-being, It’s also HR’s job to make sure leadership is aware of what’s working and where improvements are needed.
All in all, Human Resources has several responsibilities in the workplace and wears several hats on a daily basis, Perhaps its main objective could be seen as having to cultivate an environment where all members of the workplace feel seen and heard and work together as effectively and efficiently as possible.
