Black History Month Around Lake Norman.

Every February, people in the United States celebrate the accomplishments and history of African Americans as part of Black History Month.

President Gerald Ford officially recognized February as Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected achievements of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history

The Following is a Summary of Black History Month Events Around Lake Norman.

Mooresville

February 11th:

In honor of Mooresville’s Sesquicentennial Anniversary Celebration, the Town of Mooresville, the Mooresville Public Library and the 150th Anniversary Planning Committee present “Black Mooresville: The Untold Story” Documentary. 

This free event is at The Charles Mack Citizen Center on Main Street in Downtown Mooresville on February 11th at 2:00.

Cornelius

February 25th

The Cornelius Parks & Recreation Department celebrates Black History Month every year with a special event in February. This free, public event is offered in collaboration with the Smithville CommUNITY Coalition and features performances, speakers, children’s activities and more.

Huntersville

Join Mecklenburg County’s David B. Waymer Recreation Center and the Town of Huntersville Parks & Recreation department every Monday, the month of February in celebration of Black History Month!  Each Monday will feature a different Black History Program.  These programs are FREE to the public. All ages are welcome to join.  

The program line up is as follows:  

February 6, 2023 – Showing of “Harriett” at 12pm and “Soul” at 5:30pm at Dellwood Center 508 Dellwood Drive Huntersville, NC 28078 

February 13, 2023 – Story book reading by Charlotte Mecklenburg Library at 2:30pm at 508 Dellwood Drive Huntersville, NC 28078 

February 20, 2023 – Special Performance by Drums 4 Life at 2:30pm at David B. Waymer Recreation Center – 14008 Holbrooks Rd, Huntersville, NC 

February 27, 2023 – Black History Bingo/Trivia program at David B. Waymer Recreation Center at 2pm -14008 Holbrooks Rd, Huntersville, NC

Davidson – Davidson College

February 7th

Please join us at Davidson College Presbyterian Church on February 7 at 7:00 p.m. for a lecture by Pulitzer Prize-winning author and historian Taylor Branch

Branch’s lecture will be titled “Redeeming The Soul of America: MLK and The Audacity of Faith.”
