Lauren’s Gift is LKNConnect’s Outstanding Non-Profit for the month of April. Read about Lauren’s story, how to volunteer, and about their recent cancelation. —EH Stafford, Managing Editor
The Lauren Marie Kimsey Foundation for Synovial Sarcoma usually has two annual fundraising events a year. Last week we told you about our 5K Butterfly Walk/Run which after much consideration and with following the guidelines has been canceled this year.
This week we would like to tell you about the annual Fall golf tournament. Why a golf tournament? We wanted something popular, enjoyable, and memorable to bring people back each year to raise money.
There are several golf courses in the community and so many people share the love for the sport in the area — we thought we would give a tournament a shot three years ago. Not only did we come close to selling out the golf foursomes the first year, we exceeded our expectations on corporate sponsors. We decided we would continue the golf tournament each year after that. The Lake Norman community has been so supportive in helping the foundation double our goals each year.
It is our hope to create one of the best and most enjoyable golf tournaments in the Lake Norman area while also raising money to help find a cure for synovial sarcoma. Our golf tournament starts with a cook-out for lunch and ends with an awards dinner. The money raised comes from golfer registration, corporate sponsors, live-auction, silent auction, raffles and other contests.
120 golfers can participate in the tournament. The teams are based on foursome groups. We welcome single and double golfers and those individuals will be paired with others that don’t have a foursome. All ages, male and female, are welcome to join in the fun.
Everyone has a chance to win hole prizes among other prizes that are donated. Contests include four hole-in one contest, closest to the pin, long-drive contest, AR-15 golf ball shoot, and putting contests.
We have been so lucky to receive donated items from businesses for the golfer swag bags that we feel makes the day extra special for the golfers. We also provide beer, water and sports drinks throughout the tournament. The event brings people together that may not normally make the time to get out and compete on the golf course so it’s our hope that people mark their calendars each year and make new friends. Lauren always loved getting people together for a good cause.
The 3rd annual golf tournament will be held on October 19, 2021 at River Run.
