Small Business Knowledge Network w/ Jim Vogel – Small Business: There is Danger Out There!

Small Business Warning

As a small business owner, one of the most important responsibilities is to watch for trouble everywhere you go, inside and outside of your place of business. Keeping a watchful eye means being proactive all the time. At any moment, threats might impact your operations, people, or property. Start by closely monitoring your physical premises: invest in good lighting, install security cameras near entrances and parking lots, and ensure your alarm systems are always activated when the business is closed. Pay attention to who comes in and out of your business and be wary of unfamiliar visitors or vendors who show up without notice. Even casual conversations could put sensitive information at risk, so be mindful of what is shared outside and inside the business.

Stay vigilant with your digital operations. Use up-to-date cybersecurity tools to monitor unusual activities within your computer systems. If you notice unusual login attempts, unexpected emails with attachments, or sudden changes in system behavior, investigate as quickly as possible. Regularly educate your team about new scams and encourage them to report anything suspicious, anywhere, anytime.

Note that trouble can occur away from your job or business. Always remain aware of your surroundings when carrying business assets, transporting cash to the bank, or using a laptop at a coffee shop. Don’t ignore warning signs like loitering vehicles or people parked out of place around your business. Sometimes, trusting your instincts and taking precautionary action, like locking doors quickly or alerting the police or security, can prevent a bigger problem from developing into a tragedy. By maintaining this vigilant approach and always watching for trouble, small business owners can better protect themselves, their people, assets, and reputation. Remember, when you are out to dinner, at church or synagogue, and even at the grocery store, there are evil people everywhere. Run, hide, or fight, and always remain calm. There is always danger out there.
